Can golden cheetah do this?

I’ve been googling for answers for this and can’t seem to tell for sure. The wiki on the site doesn’t seem to address this question. Can I use Golden Cheetah as a virtual trainer where it uses my powertap with an ant+ usb stick to advance videos in step with my calculated speed? Or can it prompt with spinerval videos or sufferfest videos to show me what power I should be at? i.e. if I set my FTP, can it back calculate for me at what watts I should hit at various stages in the video? Thanks so much! Where is the best reference site for questions for golden cheetah anyways. The site is relatively sparse…so I’m looking for a user group or discussion group to post questions…Thanks!

To the best of my knowledge, the virtual trainer with video built-in feature is planned for Golden Cheetah V3 which is still under heavy development. Not sure about the timed video aspect though. Check out a glimpse of this feature from http://bugs.goldencheetah.org/issues/382. Why don’t you take a look at http://www.trainerroad.com as an alternative? Hope this helps.

just get trainer road. does all u ask

Not that I know of

Yes. There are erg files where you can set your FTP and it will tell you what your Target Power should be all along the sufferfest video. I use this all the time. It’s great.

This is with V3

The thread has a good sample of what it can do.

We try to keep the documentation up to date, but the development is fast!

Not currently. It is planned.

Yes, this it can do. We use the ErgDB internet resource too, so if there is a .Erg file for the video (they have all sufferfest covered). When you workout we overlay your telemetry on the workout graph and you can adjust intensity on the fly and pause workouts.

If the workout isn’t on ErgDB we also have a workout wizard for generating them from ride files or editing them by hand.

We also support riding with streetview and can work with ANT+, Computrainer and Tacx Fortius devices on Mac, Linux and Windows.

I definitely like the new V3, it shows me pretty much everything in the interval window that I’d like to see. I’d love to use it for running as well, is there a way to shift the display to pace instead of mph? Or to show at least 2 digits of speed, i.e. 8.8mph = 6:49 pace versus only the even mph i.e. 8mph = 7:30 pace or 9mph = 6:40 pace? That would be ideal for looking closer at things like a 1 mile or 0.5 mile running interval. I know I can see it in the edit data page, but that’s also in km so one extra conversion step there too.

Sure - we need to add a ‘pace’ metric. I wonder if anyone uses minute-kilometers ?? I’d have thought minute-miles was appropriate even if you prefer metric units ??

Everyone,

Thanks for the community help! Golden cheetah is the epitome of open source development’s potential for me. Mark, I am amazed at what you guys have been able to generate in terms of functionality. I’ll be setting up my pain cave with version 3 and playing with erg files. Thanks a bunch! JOining the user group email list too!

(I know this thread is old.) Pace should match the metric/imperial. The pace is about how much time it takes to cover the basic unit of distance. Imagine training for a marathon in Europe or Canada, and you are trying to break the 3 hours mark (a 4:15 min/km pace). You get indication that your pace is 6:57 min/mi. How close are you to your goal? Yes, that’s what I thought…

Slight hijack, but… Can I add the power curve for my trainer in Golden Cheetah v3? I have it (http://www.minourausa.com/_userdata/v100_performance-data.pdf) but a quick grep for Kinetic in the Golden Cheetah folder (I have a Mac) seems to show that this may be in the app itself and not externalized in a file? I’d like to compare GC with trainerroad, and also I’m still waiting for Reid to add my trainer to trainer road so GC seemed like a good alternative if I can do it myself faster. Seems like I may have to build?

I’ll do you a deal. You work out how to make that a formula to get power from speed and I’ll code it up

Looks like the Frenchman is going to have to dust off the curve fitting thingy… Ugh. Ok, will get back to you. Have you considered making this data rather than code? At the worst (but better then now) it could be edited by people, even if the UI doesn’t support it.

Looking forward to playing with Golden Cheetah. Any pointer to video support in v3? (I’m looking to getting some Sufferfest workouts.)

To get video to work, set the workout library setting on options and put the video in that directory. you can download the workout files themselves from the tools menu (they come from ErgDB). All the sufferfest videos have associated erg files.

Once you’ve done that they’ll appear in the workout library on the left hand side.

Thanks.

Hey, what kind of equation do you want? I’ve been going with polynomial (third degree). This yields for example (where x^n is x to the nth power):

V100 on H: y = -0.0036x^3 + 0.2815x^2 + 3.4978x - 9.7857
V100 on 5: y = -0.0023x^3 + 0.2067x^2 + 3.8906x - 11.214

something simple! lol.

Here is an example for the KK

watts = (5.244820) * mph + ( (0.01968) * (mph^3) );

Seems like the same thing (oky, Kinetic doesn’t have a square, but it has an x and an x^3), except that the Minoura curve is in km/h not mph. Do you want mph? What if I email you (to the email on the v3 Golden Cheetah site?) an Excel spreadsheet that has all the data in mph, and five curves with their equations? You can then use Excel to pick a different curve fitting if you want, or just use the simple polynomials (like the Kurt K one and the ones I posted).

I’ll implement whatever you want, you are probably the only person that will use it!

I’m a simple soul, give me a formula and I’ll code it

either mph or kph is fine.

Cheers,
Mark

 That is a “baby trainer.” I hear the V130 is more popular (and I’ll be happy to contribute formulas too) but a V100 is what was given to me. Alright, I’ll post formulas here. Thanks Mark. Let me know when I can get a GC that has the Minoura V100 data

x is speed in kilometer per hour; y is watts

V100 on H: y = -0.0036x^3 + 0.2815x^2 + 3.4978x - 9.7857
V100 on 5: y = -0.0023x^3 + 0.2067x^2 + 3.8906x - 11.214
V100 on 4: y = -0.00173x^3 + 0.1825x^2 + 3.4036x - 10
V100 on 3: y = -0.0011x^3 + 0.1433x^2 + 2.8808x - 8.1429
V100 on 2: y = -0.0007x^3 + 0.1348x^2 + 1.581x - 3.3571
V100 on 1: y = 0.0004x^3 + 0.057x^2 + 1.7797x - 5.0714
V100 on L: y = 0.0557x^2 + 1.231x - 3.7143

Thanks Mark!

done. I’ve pushed the update to github (https://github.com/srhea/GoldenCheetah), we now need to wait for Gareth to throw a new build up over on goldencheetah.stand2surf.net

Rock on! Thanks!
