My road bike is equipped with Campy Record components, and I just recently replaced the chain because it had stretched.
It shifts through the gears very smoothly, but whenever I hit an uphill, and start pushing hard, there seems to be some skipping.
My rear cassette is a little worn, and I’m guessing if I replace it,it will eliminate the problem.
I have 3 questions.
If I dont replace the cassette is it possible that after a week or two of riding, the chain might stretch a bit and stop the skipping?
If I need to replace it,can I replace it with a cassette thats a little less expensive?
Cassette sugestions?
Thanks
It sounds like your cassette is worn, just as you expect. My recommendation is replace it and yes, you can with a less expensive one. I bought a few Veloce cassettes from Lickbikes on line. Excel sports has some, but the higher end.
If you just keep running without changing, you risk damaging your chainrings and pulleys.
Your cassette is probably worn out. It may only be in a few cogs, but generally I replace chains before they stretch, every 6 months or so. That helps the cassette last a lot longer, in fact I haven’t had to replace a cassette in the last 8 years or so. I do have several sets of wheels, but most riding is done on 2 different pairs. Call it 5 years on one cassette.
You can replace the cassette with any other campy 9 speed cassette, and it will work just fine. You will never notice the difference between a Record cassette and a Veloce cassette. I’d say go with Veloce or Chorus.
The chain will take a lot longer than a week or 2 to stretch again. Remember, it really isn’t the chain “stretching”. The chain stretches because the pivots wear, and the bushings wear, increasing the amount of play in the system. The links themselves don’t get any longer.
