They have the Campy Chorus front derailleur on sale at Bike Nashbar. It says “Max chainring 54t”, does that make sense? If you can install it high enough shouldn’t it also work with a 56 teeth chainring?
Yes it will work. I have done it only mine has “Record” on it…it is the exact same as the old Record Der.

I believe what they are referring to is the manufacturer’s capacity rating. This is the maximum difference in the number of teeth between the largest and smallest chainrings. Max chainring 54t should mean that 54 - 39 = 15. 15 is the capacity of the front derailleur in this case. Does this mean the derailleur will not work with a 55t or 56t chainring? Not necessarily, but it was not designed to perform optimally with a capacity that exceeds 15.
Campa is very conservative in their spec’s - wants everything to work perfect. Both front and read mec. works fine for chainring and cogs a bit out of spec. (As well as they didn’t need to rebuild everything for compact crank - but they want it to be PERFECT.)

Another stupid question. Could you use a triple front derailleur with double chainrings?
I would think that all you need to do is to limit the travel appropriately with the screws and it should work.
Colorado cyclist has 2003 Record derailleurs on sale, but only the triple verion.

Sounds like it should. If we’re wrong on this, expect someone to point it out very quickly.
This may be a problem with Shimano triple derailleurs but I don’t think you would have a problem with Campy should you try this.
