Campy Chain Tool?

The Campy brand chain tool is $100.

Do any of the the park tool chain tools (like $15) work for 10 spd Campy chains. Time to replace chain (I will be switching to a Wipperman), and I would prefer to do this myself, but $100 for a chain tool is insane. All the campy tools are overpriced for that matter.

Can you get a shop to take off the campy chain? Once you install the wipperman you won’t need the $100 tool.

I recommend using a Wipperman quick link. On my Chorus 10-speed setup, I use the standard Campy chain with the Wipperman link. On my Shimano Ultegra 10 setup, I use a Wipperman chain and link. Both setups work well. Just make sure you get the correct width link or chain. The Campy 10-speed chain is 6.2mm wide. The Shimano chain is 6.05mm wide. So use either the Campy or Wipperman 6.2 chain with the 6.2 link.

Be advised, though, that Campy has changed their chains for '06. I think they will be narrower. This means that the Wipperman link will not work with them (unless Wipperman makes a new link for the new 2006 chain).

If you choose to forego the link, don’t worry about getting the Campy tool. You can use a Park or Shimano makes a nice one. Just be sure you know how to use it correctly. I messed up a Campy chain with a non-Campy tool because I was using it incorrectly (pinched several links and didn’t know how to loosen them up with the tool).

The Park Shop-Quality tool works well. I’ve yet to find another non-Campy tool that works well.

I’d echo the others’ responses - go with a Wipperman.
