I’m going up to Placid to cheer on a friend, and i’m too cheap to get a room and i imagine they are all booked anyway. Anyone know of any campsites nearby?

Try this site: http://www.reserveamerica.com/jsp/commonpage.jsp?goto=/maps/NYY1.html
You can make reservations thru the site as well.
You might want to check out Lake George

Its not that far from the race and if you aren’t doing it the short drive wouldn’t be an issue.
There is a KOA in Willmington (Check www.Whitefaceregion.com).
If you have a boat or canoe there is an island in Lake Placid that has a couple lean-toos(sp) that are first come, first serve.
I stayed at the KOA in 2002 (while racing) and 2003 (cheering). The campground is nice and is straight on the bike course in the long uphill grind toward lake placid, about 8 miles from Placid. It is actually one of the best place to cheer on the bike course since you can see cyclist from far away and they are going pretty slow. And then you can bike into town to cheer athletes on the run course.

Hi,
It is relatively cheap, you can get a campsite probably a week or so before the race, and it is only 5 miles from the start. It is very quiet, and it is right next to a cheap place to eat. The only down side (if it is a down side) is that you can not see the race from your campsite. I stayed there the first year I competed ('99) and it was really good. I now live in Saranac Lake (8 miles from placid) so I wouldnt need to camp if I could afford the race. It is a state campground, so reservations can be made for a nominal fee. Take care.
