Campag 11 speed/10 speed dilemma - anyone got the answer?

Guys

About to invest in group set for new TT bike and was about to push the button on Record 10 speed as no shifters yet available for 11 speed and 10 speed makes bike more compatible if I want to “upgrade” for example to dedicated TT chain set/SRM etc etc. In addition, have 11 speed on my road bike so would need to “downgrade” this in order to swap for training wheels etc. Downside is investing in not-the-latest system (Campag clearly moving to 11 speed in all ranges). To be clear, I am not looking for more gears, just ideally wanting to buy latest Campag equipment which is presumably latest technology and compatible with road bike. Wondered if anyone had experience or knowledge of the following:

  1. Setting up 10 speed shifter (while waiting for Campag to bring out 11 speed) with 11 speed chain set/derailleur/cassette and making appropriate adjustments to get it to work?

  2. If this does not work, going for 11 speed chainset and using this with 10 speed derailleur and cassette so that at least part of system is latest

  3. Knowledge of when Campag is going to be bringing out the 11 speed shifters

Input appreciated

From the forward-looking, compatibility side, get 11 spd. You can use a friction bar end instead of indexed. I have no idea on Campy’s timeline for 11spd bar ends but certainly they will have to make one in the near future. What do the pro teams do? Likely just stick with 10 for now.

Since 10 spd and 11 spd freehubs are the same, and you don’t use the brifters on a TT bike, there’s not much 11 spd except the cassette and those can be swapped easily in a few minutes.

Do you know if one can adjust the throw on the rear derailleur only to use 10 of the 11 rear cogs? If so, I guess one can get the 11 speed chain set, front/rear derailleur and cassette, turn the washer around in side the bar end shifters to make them friction vs indexed and wait for Campag to produce 11 speed bar end shifters?

If at a later date I wanted to change the chain set to an FSA Neo Pro or Zipp Chrono, would these work on an 11 speed set-up?

Thanks

The travel of the RD is the same since the cassette is the same overall width. The center-to-center spacing of the 11 speed cassette is smaller though. It’s not as simple as just adjusting a stop screw to limit the travel.

I don’t think Campy 10spd bar ends can be run in friction but Shimano can.

The Campy 11 spd chain is 5.4mm width, the Campy 10 speed is 5.9mm. Likely, the front chainrings won’t present any issue. Best to verify that with Campy USA or similar. You also may be able to get the width at the teeth from the technical section on the campy website.
