I know you can ride in Camp Pendleton if you have your ID, but can someone be more specific than that?
Where do you enter?
All you need is a picture ID?
Can you go at any time? (during the day)
Stuff like that.
Thanks.
a drivers license, government ID, something with a picture on it.
from the south, you can enter at the main gate or on the weekends you can enter by the harbor at the top of the hill, if you know the area, you will know what i am talking about.
from the north, at the end of san anofre sp? you turn left and head into the base go through the gate.
on all three gates you will have to stop and show ID. there are signs telling you where to go to follow the bike route.
as for time, i think during the day, i have never attemted to ride through at night, but i am not sure they would turn you away.
Thanks for the response.
I don’t really know what you are talking about, have lived in SD for only a little under a month now.
If you can give me the gist of the main gate, that will be very helpful
Thank you again.
take the 5 north or south, it doesn’t matter and there are signs for the CP exit, i think its harbor drive, whichever direction when you exit head west (aka towards water), follow it till it forces you to turn left and go down the hill, thats the hill i was taking about. take the slight left at the fork and follow it, free parking is on the left.
if its the weekend go out the same enterance to the free parking lot as you came in and go back up the hill, they gate at the top is normally open. if its not, then at the top of the hill you will go right and follow it straight, go under the 5 and go up the slight left turning hill towards the main gate.
The gate that is being referenced is the Del Mar gate and it is open during the week as well. Depending on what time you are coming to the base it might be a safer and smarter alternative. The only road that you can not ride on is Basilone Road other than that they are all free game. If you are concerned about running into Basilone don’t worry there are signs that say bikes not allowed also it is off the general path people take through the base. Pendleton offers a unique experience to ride in SoCal with minimal traffic and only a couple of lights. There are always plenty of riders this time of year on the roads who should be able to help out out as well. If you have any questions let me know and I can give you more direction.
click on the link below, i’ve marked the three gates, Main, Del Mar and Las Pulgas for you.

Be sure to bring a Glow Belt with you. The new order states that all marines will wear them when running, cycling or riding a motorcycle regardless of the time of day. Will the MP at the gate stop you…that is really a hit or miss thing. I know guys who have had to pull over and call for a ride after being stopped by the MP’s. It isn’t the LCpl’s fault though. They are just trying to keep the riders and runners safe.

can you ride the whole CA70.3 bike leg??
can you ride the whole CA70.3 bike leg??
No.
And the last time we were there, they wouldn’t let us through the Del Mar gate.
clm
nope…unless you know a marine (an high-ranking officer is better) that will ride it with you. ![]()
You can ride most of the front half, from the Main Gate on Vandergrift thru to the exit at Las Pulgas Gate. Than continue north on Old 101, through the San Onofre Campground to San Clemente (trestles bike path), and inland on Christianitos. You will more than likely be turned away at the Christianitos Gate however…I’ve ridden there 4 times and gotten thru twice. In the month prior to the race, they are a little more lenient.
Unfortunately, the difficult section of the course is beyond this point.
Once through the Christianitos gate, you’re ok until the section on Basilone, which is only open to bikes on race day.
is the saturday 8:00 am del mar starbucks group (SD tri) going up through there at all? or just stopping at oceanside store?
Hello Jagerstar and All,
Suggest calling Provost Marshal about ‘glow stick’ info - never heard of that.
Cheers,
Neal
From an earlier ST Post:

Base Advisories Base Access for Cyclists
Limited civilian bicycle traffic has resumed through Camp Pendleton, providing access to bicyclists through the Main Gate to points north. Bicyclists seeking access must wear helmets and carry a valid driver’s license or state-issued I.D. Access will be permitted on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and weekends from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cyclists must ride single file.
For more access information please contact the Provost Marshal Office Desk Sergeant at 760-725-5106.
Sorry, I don’t usually ride with that group…so I don’t know. (I live in Oceanside, thats a long way to go to meet up).
As I’m told, and I ride through there pretty much once a week, you can only enter from the north through the Las Pulgas Road gate. From there, you go down a small hill and turn right on Stuart Mesa Road. That leads about 7 miles south to Vandegrift. Turn right on Vandegrift and go up the hill about 1.2 miles to the Main Gate. You are not typically permitted to enter the Del Mar gate and I’ve been turned away there a few times, and you cannot ride any other part of the Base.
