Has anybody used this combination? Does this work?
The campag spec gives a max of 26 for the short and recommends the medium for the 13-29 but campag are known for their conservative specs.
I’m off to the Alps in a couple of weeks and I want the bail out option of the 29, but can’t justify the cost of a new rear mech just to run on this cassette.
I haven’t done this with Campy, but I have done similar things with Shimano. It works fine so long as you avoid crossover gears. In those cases, the derailleur won’t be able to take up enough slack or you might adjust it so the chain is not long enough. You will have problems in both cases.
This will depend on your Der Hanger too…plus you can (with higher models) adjust the distance of the jockeys to the cogs. I have in the past put on a 29 and the only issue was just a bit of grinding - jockey agains the cogs…LOL…but this was a bail out gear and it did not bother me to do that for the time I needed to do that. I would run with it, try it, you cant really hurt it now can you…if you have just one sloppy gear and it is a bail out gear I dont see it as a big issue.
I have this on my cyclocross bike with a Chorus short cage rear derailler. The derailler pulley presses the chain right up into the 29T sprocket, but it works. It is not perfect but would be okay for a bailout.
I did get this to work on my bike, but it will vary because der. hangers are different. When the shop guy first tried this combo on my bike the pully pressed on the 29. But then he noticed if the chain was a couple of links shorter, pulling the cage ahead the upper pully pivoted away from the 29 and no more chain rub between the pully and the 29. Genius isn’t it? Why couldn’t I think of that?! And I think if you are going to be riding in the Alps you don’t want any chain rub on the 29 because you might be spending a lot of time in that gear! CST
