to the botching of his special needs bag?
Remember some nitwit handed him the wrong bag during the special needs handoff on the bike.

And by “nitwit” I assume you mean volunteer. You know those people who, without their help, it would be impossible (virtually) to put on events like this so people like Cam can earn his living at it (and the rest of us can have fun).
well that may have been harsh but you would think at the world championships, they would get those named athletes correctly. If an average joe has his mixed up, we can wait and be happy, but for a pro to have that mixup doesn’t make sense, at least to me.
yeah…lets be nice to volunteer…ultimitly, it s cameron mistake to not have gone back to get the right bag…Tom Evans was in the same situation as cameron, he was handed the wrong bag…he came back to give back the bag so the right person will get it later and got his bag then…back to the front group by chasing for 10 minutes hard… cameron could have done the same thing but he decided to not leave to comfort of the group…
volunteer are great and they do there best…mistake happen and elite athlete are train to deal with this…

It was a bit harsh and I may be a bit sensitive; I just carry a whole new level of respect for volunteers after completing IMWI and seeing them all stand out in the rain for 17 hours to help idiots like me ![]()
As to the jist of your post I agree with Johnyo above. If Cameron was to attribute his slower time to anything other than himself it would not reflect well on him. Just like Normann trying to change his tire with a stick and then getting mad at everyone else. Elites are/should be trained to deal with this.

But my question was, has anybody read a report why he didn’t do as well as some expected?
Volunteers are important and helpful, and I enjoy doing it when I can. Perhaps because I watch the sport I would easily recognize Cameron. However, my limited experience with him is that he’s not the sort to lay blame.
I know of many athletes that were handed the wrong bags at the bike special needs, so apparently there was some sort of problem with their system this year.

I’m a touch uncomfortable with this thread. Relatively new poster (joined yesterday) coupled with the other Kona thread going on. If you’re trying to create an implication, please stop. If I’m wrong - I’m sorry.
Cam has not implicated or otherwise that the special needs bag had anything to do with his lower than normal performance. My guess? He is too much of a first class guy to blame it on that. I would also tend to believe that not getting the right bag and ultimately not waiting for the right bag didn’t help him to be his best on that day.
What implication?
I was wondering what impact the mix up on the handing out of a special needs bag had upon Cameron. As an aside, my first Ironman in New Zealand 2005 had Cameron as the winner, so I developed an interest in his progress.
I do run organizations from time to time, so organizational behavior and management interests me. In New Zealand and in Couer-d-Alene, we experienced no organizational mixups. So, just wondering.
Read it on his site:
So the site state the lack of drink led, as he believed to his downfall. He didn’t blame anybody and seemed gracious.
That’s what I would have thought though.
I am always hopeful a pro, or really just about anyone, will one day say that the reason they had a bad run or a bad race was becasue they go their @ss kicked or that they just couldn’t get it done.
I admire that person because in the end, that’s usually the real reason why peep don’t perform well. But instead we always hear stupid excuses like, “my head hurt that day!”…
I read one the other day where they said they had a bad race because they served some drink at the bike aid stations that they were not used to and it upset their stomach! Huh!? Well, ask questions before hand and come prepared. Golly gee…
