Cam Brown Speaks

Here’s a link to hear about Brown’s day, also what he and the head marshall thought about the drafing issues that delevoped.

what a whiner. doesnt he know that deboom and kraft got penalties and went on to win.

if it is whining to say that the marshalls were over zealous, then it would seem that the entire pro field are whiners (including many who did not get penalties)

So be it. I was happy to see the marshals handing out so many penalties. I’d rather them be overzealous than too lax any day.

really? i think you might see it differently if you were on the end of a bad call

perhaps there is another option - not too zealous, not too lax - ever heard the story of Goldilocks and the 3 bears?

I didn’t think he was actually penalized by the marshals. Didn’t his bag just accidentally get taken to the sin bin?

Probably. When’s the last time you actually heard anyone say they deserved a penalty?

It’s hard to tell 8-9m from 10m? WTF?!? I guess you shouldn’t be trying to ride right on the edge of legality, if you don’t want to risk a penalty.

I think it is also poor form to criticize the officials, and call them inexperienced. People make mistakes, deal with it.

Criticizing officials for mistakes is a lot like criticizing the weather. They are human and make mistakes. It might not be fair that mistakes by officials affect the outcome, but sometimes the wind changes direction between quarters of a football game. That isn’t fair either, but it happens and you just have to deal with it.

I think the pro men underestimated the effect of the separate start, and weren’t expecting to be put under the officiating microscope. One could easily see/say that Cam was either losing contact or coming up on the rider in front of him, and was pushing to try to get into the draft (legal or otherwise) to recover on the descent, and the official saw it, and he got a penalty. We are all told that we need to respect the draft zone, even if that means putting on the brakes, so going downhill is not excuse. Uphill is an exception, because of the low speeds, downhill, it’s much easier to pull up to someone in the draft.

I think all the pros should adopt Olaf’s 20m approach, much better for everyone involved. It’s hard to believe that 10-12 of the top guys all ride at exactly the same speed for 112 miles. I have always heard that it’s better to race your own race and not get sucked into riding someone else’s pace. I think it’s obvious that they all (gross generalization) are trying to draft, pseudo-legally or otherwise, and a lot of them got busted this year, and they are bummed because they were just doing what they always did.

It is a shame about Olaf’s race, he’s the only one I have sympathy for.

One thing I don’t understand about Brown’s explanation. If he just turned his head he shouldn’t be given a penalty. You can be behind someone for ten seconds. So by his explanation he was looking behind for 10 seconds while going downhill? Yet I haven’t heard him say I he shouldnt be given a penalty because he wasn’t drafting, only that it was inadvertant.

Styrrell

Who told him he had a penalty? Volunteers or officials? I suspect that his bag was accidentally taken to the penalty box, and then when the volunteer couldn’t find his bag in the normal spot they assumed that he had a penalty.

what about when the mistake prevents you from making a living?
I guess Olaf would be one of these americans that sue for a yes or a no, he would just sue the race to get his prize money back…
I know they make mistakes, but they should use a bit of critical thinking when he got to T2 and no one was able to say for what he had a penalty for… That sucks. By chosing athletics as a profession, you get a lot of benefits (like fame, adulation and doing what many dream of doing for a living), but you are also choosing to live the mercy of things like mistakes by officials, bad weather, fluke injuries, accidents etc.

stupidity in training is when you do 4 ironman’s in a year and then expect to do well on the last one ;).

I watched Ironman Austria last weekend on OLN, they actually had pretty decent coverage of the bike. Olaf and the entire chase pack were all riding illegally, I was actually yelling at the T.V., it was bad.

Dude. You are in la-la land. You are basically saying that all is fair if you are a pro, even being given a penalty for NOTHING.

Well, he at least has the fame of being discussed on slowtwitch, isn’t that reward enough?

Probably not, but mistakes by officials are one of the things that affects the outcome in sporting events. It’s like drawing a bad judge on a case; not particularly fair, but you are stuck with it. It could be a lot worse. My grandfather had to go work in a coal mine when he was seven to put food on the table because his father had died. No point in complaining; he just went and made the best of a bad situation.

Was that BS offensive interference on Braylon Edwards two years ago in THE GAME fair? No even though that’s arguably why Ohio State won THE GAME that year. But, it’s still what happened and Ohio State still won THE GAME.

very impressive. too bad he gets such little press here in the states - other than slowtwitch that is.

Too bad, the course looked beautiful. The drafting was everywhere and I am sure you are correct about Olaf trying to get away and ride honestly their was nothing he could do but to accept the cheating forced upon him.

I was impressed with Francois Chaboud…the guy can ride, awesome position, smooth pedal.
