Calling all Crank Length Shorteners

fill me in how it worked or didn’t work for you changing from what to what…did cadence to wattage increase/decrease?..was it noticeably different? what size chain rings you running? will be back stateside in a couple weeks and looking to change some stuff around on my Kalibur.
Thanks in advance for everyone’s input
Mike

Went from 172.5 to 165. It took about three months to feel good on them. I still really miss my longer cranks when standing up, but I love them when riding in the aero position. The real test will be next sunday.

You want want to search for some past posts by Dr. Andy C. who went from ~172.5mm cranks down to ~150mm. Pretty certain he’s back on the longer ones now after his tests.

Over the years I’ve used anywhere between 165 and 175 mm, depending on what I owned/borrowed. While I can usually feel a 5 mm difference in crank length - and sometimes a 2.5 mm difference, especially if I try them back-to-back - I haven’t observed any differences in my performance ability.

Earlier this year, I experimented with some custom-shortened 148 mm crank arms. The jury is still out on those, but for now at least I’ve gone back to 170 mm cranks (in part because the 148 mm arms are for the track SRM, so I can’t readily train on them outdoors).

PM Rappstar. He’s on 172.5 and his inseam is 37in.
I just put 165s (from 172.5) on my Tri bike after my visit to Xantusia last weekend. I’ve done one outdoor ride and 2 trainer rides. Frankly, the only difference I notice is that I don’t bind up my hams and I have more chest clearance and better breathing even though my drop is much lower. It’s hard to tell about speed since there was so much cross traffic the other day, that I couldn’t compare times. Overall, I was more comfortable, despite the increased drop.

like docfuel, i went shorter after a trip to xantusia and some face time with john cobb. because they’re shorter my knees don’t come up as high and don’t “pinch” my hip angle. the shorter crankarms effectively “open” the hip angle…at least for me.

not sure if they’ll be faster per se but in my case dan, jordan, and john all agreed that i could drop my front end and be more aero with the new position…a position i couldn’t comfortably hold with 172.5’s only because my knees hit my chest. i went out for about an hour the other day and had no problem staying in my aerobars the entire time. putting out lots of watts doesn’t do much good if you’re a windsock right?
