For those of you racing or thinking of racing the Californiaman Triathlon.
Swim - The Port of Sacramento…practice swims to be announced soon. With the water temps between 62-78 lately you don’t have to wait until race day to see how the swim venue will be - I will announce practice swims soon via the Mad Cows website…so check it out next week at www.madcowsracing.org
Bike - Solano and Yolo Counties…Flat, not small hills or rollers, FLAT…only incline is less than 3% for less than 3 city blocks, hot, windy(like on the Queen K), and did I say flat…okay road conditions are awesome except for two sections…one on the first loop and one of the second…the first is just higher contrast gravel lasting for less than 3 miles up by Lake Solano…the second is on Road 25 on in Yolo county and you just have to watch out for the potholes that will be highlighted with fluorescent paint. Tomato trucks will be out there due to harvest but the other day I was on the course and only saw 5 cars/trucks over the entire 56 miles of the second loop. Ohhhh, by the way, I gps’d the course myself so that it is exactly 112 miles…didn’t want anyone to have to ride any farther this year.
Run - Through the UC Davis campus arboretum, out to the South Davis bike paths and back into town on 8th street…with a 2 loop course loaded with themed aid stations playing all kinds of awesome music so you won’t be tempted to break the no MP3 players USAT rule.
VOLUNTEERS ARE ESSENTIAL AND NEEDED FOR THIS RACE SO I HAVE DECIDED TO POST THE EMAIL THAT TELLS ALL ABOUT HOW TO VOLUNTEER…SO YOU CAN ENCOURAGE EVERYONE TO HELP OUT.
HERE IT IS: CALIFORNIAMAN TRIATHLONNEEDS VOLUNTEERSSEPTEMBER 17TH, 2005 This year the Californiaman Triathlon will debut at it’s new venue in Davis, CA, on September 17th. I have emailed you in order to solicite volunteers for this event. In order to gain some more enthusiastic lead volunteers that might be interested in leading an aid station on the run course or the bike course I am sending out this email. This year J&A Productions will be giving out awards to the volunteers at a special volunteer segment of the awards ceremony the day following the race. J&A Productions will also be giving each volunteer a t-shirt and nylon race bag that will be filled with sponsor schwag. In order to make this race the best ironman distance race on the west coast it is my goal to have 2000 volunteers cover the many aspects of this race. Please go here for the following information: Race Information: www.japroductions.com/cm Volunteer Information: J&A Productions - CaliforniaMan Volunteers Volunteer Online form: Volunteer Signup Signup here to volunteer. Please email me directly at jamesclan@aol.com if you are interested in leading an aid station for your group as I have a limited budget for small donations to groups for their time. Call me also at 1-888-RACE-VOL if you would like to talk by phone about this opportunity. Volunteering at this race distance is a special opportunity to be involved with triathletes that strive to go the farthest distance in their sport. What an awesome experience to place the medal on triathlete’s like Bill Bell who at 82 yrs old is still racing and finishing ironman distances and will be racing the Half Ironman at this race. Come and meet Mark Allen, Beth Zinkand, Jamima Iley, Diana Hassel and Lydia Schlosser who are all going to be present at the Carbo loading dinner Thursday night with Q&A, Race course information and Mark’s Key note address. Come and help these athletes have a great race through your volunteer efforts…as everyone knows, it is the volunteers that make the race…we will be having food, drinks and fun until midnight…it will be a great party with lots of different volunteer opportunities so tell your friends to get that online application turned in. We hope to see you at the race this year. Carpe diem, Mary James

I believe the sign ups so far are 200 for the IM - (500 max)
and 580+ for the Half (1000 max)
People will be glad they signed up and those that didn’t will be signing up next year…at least that’s what I think…it will be a really good race and I guess since my volunteer coordinator reputation is on the line…I better get off the forum and get back to work!!
So far I have 738 volunteers but I was kind of shooting for 2000…soooo, if you know anyone that needs another free t-shirt…likes to hand out water, direct traffic, work at topless aid stations out in the middle of a farm field(sorry, aid station already overfull) or sit in a men’s changing tent…hmmmmm, only guys in the guys tent sorry girls:) send those nice people my way…and if you have the ability to hang out all day and help…well, I might just have to put you on my list to get a comp for a J&A race in 2006…of course you would really have to hang out all race day.
All in good fun…this should be a great time…here’s to a dead calm(for those of you that aren’t sailors that means absolutely no wind), 68 degrees with a cloud cover, and clean, cool swim start…yeah right…Thanks for the question and I will stop rambling now!!
I admit, I haven’t really trained in hardcore heat. We just don’t have it here at the beach in SoCal. Maybe rig up a hat so it can hold one of those icepacks in it for the run!
Last year they had the best aid stations I have ever seen at any race, M Dot included. Only issue was the Amino Vital and no Cytomax or Gatorade. Looks like they got that figred out this year. with Amino Vital AND Cytomax.
Found this in the FAQ section of the web site.
What is the location and content of the bike course aid stations?
Bike aid stations will be located approximately every 15 miles. These aid stations will provide bike water bottles with water, Cytomax and Amino Vital, energy bars, energy gels, bananas, peanut butter sandwiches, fig bars, Snickers® bars, de-fizzed cola, strawberries and grapes.
RUN What are the locations and contents of the aid stations?
There will be a full aid station at every mile of the run course serving water, Cytomax and Amino Vital energy drink, de-fizzed cola, de-fizzed Sprite/7Up, energy gels, energy bars, dried fruit, fresh fruit (bananas, grapes, strawberries), cubed peanut butter sandwiches, fig bars, Snickers® bars, cookies, salt cubes and sugar cubes. There will be sufficient caffeinated and non-caffeinated items. If you have special needs please see special needs bag on the run below.
Just heard today that you can sign up for the Caliman Half OR full up until the day before at the registration sign up…of course I wouldn’t recommend this but hey if you get paid on the 15th, well then the 16th is a perfect day to sign up.
I think that it is great that the race is still open to those that can’t decide whether it will be a good race or not…It will be a great race and one that everyone will wish they had signed up for this year…because next year…I have a very good feeling it will fill up pretty fast…maybe not, but I think that it will.
I think you will all be happy with the themed run course aid stations…I have some pretty good ones lined up…should be a fun race.
The mandatory race meeting will feature several AG stars: Bill Bell, Diana Hassel, Lydia Delis-Schlosser, Laura Sophia and several other local tri pros will be there to watch you all cross the finish line.
