For me…an awesome day!! A 40 minute PR. I loved the new Ironman wetsuit (24 minute PR SWIM!!!) I am learning to run. And Natasha Badmann had to be on crack when she said to “embrace the wind”. Jeez! Nothing like almost being blown off the bike, and I’m not small. My friend who lives up there on the course said it was the windiest day in over a month. Oh yeah, the full IM bike was nearly 117 freaking miles!!! I love to ride my bike, but really…
As Brad Kearns said, I am the undefeated ATHENA CHAMPION of CaliforniaMan! I guess that means I’ll have to go back next year and defend my title. ![]()
Seriously, J&A did an excellent job (well, except for that extra mileage on the bike). The aid stations were stocked to the max, the volunteers were wonderful. A great race. And it was so nice to meet even more Slowtwitchers–I met Jacquie in the TA prior to the race and Dre on the run. And only one snake sighting, but he was dead on the side of the road.

Thanks!! Looks like that swim was waaaaaay short!
I think the swim was a touch short. Maybe 100 yards for half, 200 for the full. I was expecting closer to 30 minutes for my swim.
Congratulations on your day! You sure looked like you were going fine when I saw you.
Thanks Jacquie! It was nice to meet you. JKastsoudas–you too!! How did your races go?

(Re: dead snake on the road) Cathy, I was going slow, but not that slow.
Delighted to hear that the bike course was long, because I was really bummed by my split.
My day went well for a first time half, I think, considering how slow I was overall. I loved the bike course but could have done without quite so much wind or the crappy pavement on Scott Road - great place to test saddles. I couldn’t have imagined riding that road twice. I hope I wasn’t in your way when you passed me, I was trying to pick a somewhat smooth line. The run was beautiful, too. All in all, I think it was tougher than I expected, and my training had been messed up for the last 6 weeks due to a back injury, so I feel satisfied that I finished in one piece for my first one. Now it’s on to Vineman half - will you be there? I’m sorry I didn’t get to meet JKatsoudas; I hope we get a race post here.
I don’t think there was a smooth line on Scott Road! I loved the Boys Ranch volunteers (juvenile detention for those of you reading along). They were very enthusiatic every time I went by them. On the last loop I told them thanks for volunteering. Some @$$hole (sounded like an adult) says, “They HAD to volunteer”. I wanted to turn around and tell him, “The friggen point of it is that they are doing a great job, are enthusiatic and having a good time. Prick!” But, I didn’t.
Yes, I will be at Half Vineman. Love that race.

Cathy, it was great meeting you, and Hinds57 and Jaylew, too. Sorry I didn’t get a chance to meet you Jacquie. Logistically this weekend was somewhat of a fiasco for me personally. We got stuck in traffic on I-80 coming up and didn’t get into town until 6:00 on Friday (thanks in large part to 3 huge meltdowns by our 3-month old, which caused some unplanned stops on the way) Race day was awesome- mostly because I had already erased any time goals from my mind and I was just able to enjoy the day. My swim felt great despite the fact that I’ve been in the water twice in the last two months. I wasn’t fast, but I felt comfortable and relaxed, which is all I could have asked for. Then it got a little ugly. Apparently I either drank about half the lake, or the remnants of a nasty stomach flu I’ve had for the last two weeks decided to act up, but I had bad stomach cramps pretty much the whole bike and run. I think I must have hit just about every Porta-potty on the bike course. Note to J&A: more Porta-potties next year, please. As others have mentioned, the paving on Aerojet and especially Scott Rd SUCKED. With all the people swerving to avoid potholes and riding in the center of the road it was very congested and darn-near impossible to pass. Then things got a little uglier. I’ll take 99% of the blame for this one for missing the pre-race meeting and not knowing the bike course better, but at the intersection of Scott and White Rock there was a “T” intersection where 1/2 IM’ers go left to go to T2, and IM’ers go right. Well, I could have sworn that the guy told me to go right… so I did. Net effect- extra 10 miles for me, thank you very much. It wasn’t until I got back to that intersection and saw people with orange bracelets going left (the same people I had passed an hour or so ago) that I realized what had happened. DAMN- oh wait… I wasn’t going for time anyway, right?! Just enjoy the ride
The run was beautiful. I didn’t see any snakes, though by mile 11 I was wishing one would jump out and bite me so I’d have an excuse to stop running. I’ve never been so happy to get to the finish in my life. The best part for me was grabbing my 2-year old and running across the line with him. Can’t wait for the pictures to be posted. All in all, hats off to J&A for an incredibly well run event- especially for a first-year race. I’ll definitely come back, but I’d really like a better bike course and only one transition area.
A few other notes: the Renn disc was awesome. Don’t let anyone tell you not to run a disc in the wind. I used a really shallow (Rolf Vector Pro) front and had no handling issues. The P3 was very comfortable despite the terrible road conditions. Don’t let anyone tell you an aluminum bike isn’t comfortable for long-course. It was just as comfortable as my Trek OCLV would have been in the same conditions. Lastly, when switching from training to race wheels, make double-sure you’ve adjusted rear der indexing REALLY well. A couple of laps around the block are not enough to test, and friction-shifting for 56 (or 66) miles on rough pavement really blows.
Everyone looked like they were having fun when they went past my corner. Although I was only about 1 mile into the bike when I saw folks. I was wearing my straw cowboy hat cheering on those I reconized. Hopefully I did a good job and everyone saw the turn that was coming up. I really did appreciate all of the folks that said “thank you.” It was really nice to know that I was appreciated and people took the time to say that. I got a couple thumbs up, and that is just as good.
From watching the race at my corner it was hard to tell the folks doing the half and the folks doing the full. It was just a long string of people for me.
On a side note, I only saw 5 (five) people actually look like they knew what they were doing on the bike when they went around the corner I was at. I know folks are trying to be safe, but I was still a little suprised at the extremely poor lines and speed some of the early folks had.
Who lost a water bottle over the BUMP around mile 1.5? I heard there were about 40 bottles picked up.
The road going through Aerojet was closed to everyone except participants. No course marshalls, no volunteers, nothing. The day before the organizers got to go through it once to check it out and clean up.
That section through Aerojet was sorta creepy. Especially the signs that said “absolutely no recreational cycling or running beyond this point” and “hazardous area- keep out”. The only spill I saw was some poor lady that got taken down by the railroad tracks on Aerojet. They were at a particularly ugly angle to the road and if you weren’t paying attention I could see how you’d go down there. I wonder how many people went down at that spot?
If I didn’t say thank you to you. I’ll say it now. All the volunteers and crew were awesome. I tried to thank as many as I could along the way. Especially those that offered to hold my bike for me on my numerous potty stops.
40 minute PR - holy cow - nice job!!!
Great job on the PR and Athena trophy. Man, who is the guy that finished 2nd in the 45-49 age group with a 2:46 marathon??? Is he for real or did he catch a bus at mile 15? Talk about saving it for the run…
It was good to meet a lot of you guys up in Folsom over the weekend. I can’t remember the names of everybody. If you have never spent time with Cathy Morgan, “The official Den Mother of Nor Cal Triathlon” at a race, you need to experience it. If there is somebody she didn’t know I would be surprised. Saturday was a post injury tune up for CDA and I was able to PR even though the bike had several bonus miles.
J&A put on a great race. The aid stations were the best I have ever seen and there were a lot of them. The volunteers really seemed to know what they were doing. This was the first time I took a water bottle at 20 MPH (the one section of the bike with a tailwind) and the lady was perfect. The swim was civil and there was no drafting on the bike that I could see. There were marshals on a motorcycles coming by every few minutes so I am sure that discouraged cheaters. I saw one guy make a u-turn before Scott road, but that was the only rule violation I saw the whole day. I have a ton of respect for those who had to face a second loop of that windy bike course. If somebody wanted to walk Scott Road I am sure you could fill a few large boxes with bike parts, tires, water bottles and the fillings from teeth and make a nice donation to Team Second Racing. The run course was great and finishing right down town and not in some parking lot was a cool change. Folsom really rolled out the red carpet for this race.
