Californiaman - High Reg. Fee?

Just wondering why the entry fee for this race seems so high for a 1st year non IM event.($400.)
Any ideas?

The Full Vineman is only $250. (early signup) for a proven race in it’s 14th year also in Northern California.

The Ultramax is also $250. for early signup. in it’s 2nd year

Anyone know why?

Thanks,
Scott

$75,000 purse?

Nope- $75K purse didn’t play any role in my registering for Californiaman, unless a portion of it goes to the M30-35 slowest swim split  There’s definitely a shortage of IM races in the NorCal area. There’s Vineman (which I’ll be doing for the first time this year) but I think you have to travel out of state for another IM. The Auburn area is an awesome venue for a race, and J&A puts on terrific races, so these three things together sort of justify/explain the cost in my mind.

I look at it a few ways:

  • I have heard nothing but good things about J&A races. Thats a + in my mind.

  • With the knowledge that this is the 1st year AND the price is $400, to me it meas that J&A KNOWS that it MUST put on a stellar race or it’s reputation will be severly effected.

  • As mentioned earlier, it is close. I live in Vacaville under 50 miles away from the place. That is really nice as I know have the opportunity to pre-race all the courses. Too me that is key since this is my first IM distance event.

  • And finally, if I am going to put it all on the line (as I plan to do) I don’t want to think that the race director and team are working on a “limited” budget. My $400 means I better be treated like a king, because I paid top notch entry fees to get into the race in the 1st place.

Hopefully someone from J&A will read this and see the expectations they have created by the high fees
