My sister is holidaying in La Jolla and I have sent her to the local bike shop with a list of stuff to buy me, as foriegners do. She says she has to pay tax on the stuff she bought, is that one of those taxes visitors can claim back at the airport ?
No such luck. You are out the money.
If the shop will ship it directly back to you (out of the country, I assume), then they won’t charge her the tax. But, as Art noted, if she pays it, you don’t get it back.
If she’s still here, have her take the stuff back and have the shop ship it. If the shipping is less than the tax, that is…

It was only $24 not worth stuffing around with, but I’ll keep that in mind next time, we did get a free water bottle ! I think it was California Bicycle Inc on La Jolla Bvd.
