Calf pain from cycling

I have a friend who has been primarily a runner and has decided to do some tri’s this year. He recently began to notice that after cycling in the morning, his calves would be tight and sore the rest of the day. I had no ideas, other than stretching. Has anyone else experienced this? Or does anyone know what could be the cause of this? He does have a new tri bike, but when he purchased it, he had a fitting done, so I would think he is fitted properly to it.

When did he start cycling? If he’s new to the sport he should definitely expect some muscle tightness and soreness…this would be normal.

He has been riding since mid-Dec. Pain has started in the last couple of weeks. He has been riding about 3 days a week.

cyclingnews.com has lots of info on that kind of thing
it might be his cleat is to close to his toes move it back.

You can probably tell him to:

get a GOOD bike fit and also to:

  1. lower his seat a little
  2. move his cleats back
  3. Yes, stretch the gastroc, and more importantly for cycling, the soleus
