Last i trained for and competed in only sprint distance tri (only my first year) , obviously intending to move up to olympic this year.
During the off season (winter) i trained just enough and through the end of winter upped my level significantly but gradually to the point where my Swimming was back to the level of the previous season but with much more endurance as was my biking , so i then turned my attention to my running but this is where my problem lies , a couple og gentle runs to get me going , then time to push it on , i picked a 5 mile run locally no hills as such just mild inclines that dragged on a little , whilst running today my calf area was starting to tighten (nothing more than i have had before so i kept going ,usually i can run it out) as it seemed to subside i felt a popping twanging sensation similar to a clicking joint but in the middle of my calf .
My physio says that i have torn ther muscla at the point that the achilles insert and that it will repair but no running for a while and nothing at all for a week to 2 .
What did i do wrong , have i dome anything specific or merely been very unlucky?
I dp i always stretch , even on this occasion before the run and warm up , someone mentioned perhaps putting inclined / hill work might be the cause , but i dunno
.
Seek a second opinion. How does your people know it is torn? is there an MRI? DId you have any x-rays done? To diagnose a muscle as torn without proper review is plain out wrong.
I have calf issue’s. Mine get tight all the time. I have to kneed my calfs daily to keep them loose. You may have just pushed a litle too hard too fast, or they might just be sore. and not to what you are not used to…
Also, FYI - an achilies tear or any other "tear for that matter will likely NOT heal in a week or two. You are going to have to play this one by ear. I didn’t see the word “pain” in your description so I doubt it is a tear.
You’re gonna have to just aqua jog your next few run workouts.
I think the stretching before running helps nothing. Some research shows that it makes things worse.
When my injury problems are at their worst, I ride the bike for a few miles before running. That works great.
I have a running background, but I am now old. I have been trying to beat the injury cycle for five years now, and I finally seem to be ahead of the curve. Probably the biggest difference is caused by having lost a little weight. Having said that I will probably trash my Achillies on my run tonight.
This is just a tough process, unless you are a young turk.
i think the weieight thing might be an issue i am about 14 lbs heavier than last season (festive period and all) and i am 35 , weather this makes me old im sure is a debate in itself but certainly no young turk…
Re the previous reply , i am in pain , unable to walk properly and climbing stairs is a complete bitch
