Caffeine intake

I experimented with caffeine on my last race and it went very well. I took two coffees and a gel with caffeine on the bike. This weekend I’ll have one of my A races for the season so I would like to maximize caffeine effect. How long before the race start should I take caffeine? Are two coffees enough?
Weather will probably be hot, so will caffeine intensify dehydration? By the way it’s a sprint race (750m, 20km, 5km).

How did you drink coffee on the bike? That’s impressive.

I drank two coffees about 2-2.5 hours before the race, and a gel while I was on the bike.

Post ride starbucks trick. Stick piece of duct tape under your saddle during the ride. Grande cup fits relatively nicely in the behind saddle bottle holders. Tape goes over drink hole to prevent spilling (lift to drink). Depending on distance, two bottle holders so buy one for loving spouse that has had to manage household on weekend morning while we go for a bike ride

Yup - I love caffeine for racing. Check the rules closely, as I think a certain blood level is “doping” though?

Anyway, many Gu gels have caffeine in them. You can also just take some caffeine pills before a race instead of the java. I believe Peter Reid’s old training blog had a bit about this - going off caffeine a week or two prior if you use caffeine/drinks often, then hitting it the morning of and during. I tried this, but the low grade headache that ensued during my caffeine taper was not worth it to me :frowning:

chocolate covered expresso beans. don’t eat too many!

caffeine was removed from the banned list years ago.

I take caffeine pills throughout the race–Usually 1/2 pill per hour. I’ve never had any trouble except the one time I forgot them during a 50k trail run–I was completely wiped out!

Cif Shot has a gel with 100mg.
