Garmin GSC 10 Speed Cadence Sensor
Garmin Edge 1000 head unit
Power 2 Max power meter
I keep having cadence drop outs.
Head unit shows cadence of 0 every 2 minutes or so (basically randomly).
I’m surprised b/c I would think the P2Max would take over if the GSC 10 sensor had skipped a beat but guess that’s not the case.
I changed batteries out in both the power meter and GSC 10 speed / cadence sensor.
How finicky is where you place the magnet on the crank are for the GSC 10? I did get new crank arms (from 172 to 165) and replaced the magnet but maybe it’s off ever so slightly? Going to try repositioning today. Could a very slight (millimeters) misalignment cause these kinds of dropouts?
I just removed the magnet from the crank arm and let the P2max handle the cadence. Actually I guess I just never installed a magnet in the first place once I got the P2max.
Only reason I have the speed sensor on my bike at all is for when I am on the trainer. And yes I realize that speed/distance on the trainer is completely irrelevant and meaningless but at least Strava doesn’t tell me that I’ve gone 0.0 KM when I upload.
I’m on 2.4 b/c I’ve heard of some issues with 2.5.
I’m at the point where I’ve STOPPED updating firmwares b/c it always seems to “break” additional things while fixing others.
I’ve been satisfied w/ 2.4.
Are you saying there are potential sensor issues w/ that version (or anything prior to 2.5)?
Good point.
Wasn’t aware that I could get the 1000 confused with the two different data feeds (Power2Max cadence & GSC 10) but maybe that is a problem?
Only reason I kept it was for maintaining speed measurement through heavy cover / tunnels.
Speed OK for you guys (i.e.- do you all just use the GPS / head unit for speed)?
As you noted, GPS speed doesn’t always work. Even when it does, it doesn’t always work well, particularly if you’re doing something like aero testing.
I had the same problem. I removed the magnet on my crank arm and let the P2M handle all cadence. Problem solved. I figured that would be easier than trying to have 2 simultaneous cadence readings flying around.
So does the GSC 10 still give you speed if you are on your trainer (or in heavy cover areas such as wooded areas or tunnels where the GPS is unavailable)?
I think I’m going to ask the Power2Max folks if there really can be confusion caused by using both the GSC 10 and Power2Max at the same time.
Get rid of the magnet on your crank arm. There is no need for it anymore with your powermeter installed. I can almost guarantee you this is your problem. You can leave the speed/cadence sensor on the chain stay and keep your speed magnet on the wheel spoke. This way you can still get speed on your trainer and when GPS is unavailable. So your speed/cadence sensor will really only be a speed sensor.
I have a bontrager speed/cadence sensor on my bike. I have a separate trainer wheel that has a magnet on a spoke to get speed on the trainer. My outside wheels do not have magnet on them as I just rely on gps.
Thanks.
That’s looking like it will work.
Not 100% idea for my trainer set up but that’s just the way I have it set up (EZ-Trainer App on my iPad w/ Wahoo Fitness Key for iPad).
Cadence doesn’t get picked up from Power2Max.
At least I should be good on the road (i.e.- not trainer).
Hmmmmmm…
So everything was working fine after removing the cadence magnet from my crank arm.
Power2Max took over on the cadence and my Edge 1000 stopped having the cadence drop outs.
Well today (and I think this is totally unrelated), I started having power & cadence drop outs (same time). Obviously the same time b/c Power2Max is measuring both.
The question is why? I have had this set up for over a year now with no issues.
I have an Edge 1000 FW 2.4 (I have not updated b/c Garmin tends to break things while fixing others).
Battery last changed in P2M during November 2014 (renata battery).
I looked at the battery level of the PM on my Edge 1000 and it says “good”.
I will say this: I lost power / cadence MAINLY when I went down into the aero position. Pop back up into seated position … power / cadence returned.
The Edge 1000 is mounted between my aero bars and always has been. No change there either.
My thought / concern is … gulp- could my power meter be dying? What are the signs / symptoms?
This is one of the classics. I (proud to say) was probably one of the first owners of P2M (USA).
Maybe a bad battery? But again ---- the Garmin read it as “good” in the sensor details.
What should my trouble shooting steps be?
Have you tried positioning the Garmin closer to the P2M? I know that might be a pain, but I’ve been learning a lot about ANT+ lately the hard way, trying to get the technology in place for a fundraiser coming this Sunday where 21 people will be going for Sufferlandrian Knighthood. Humidity can really mess with the signal, and that big humid thing on top of your bike (your body) can cause issues, especially as you get into a ride and start to really sweat.
So, when you mention the dropouts happening in the aero position kind of sends up a red flag to me. Perhaps having your arms close to the Garmin is too much humidity and it is interfering with the signal. I would try just repositioning it, or maybe running a better fan or opening a window to reduce/remove the humidity.
I hope that helps - I completely understand your frustration!
