Just wondering, when buying Zipps from here, assuming you are buying from an individual and not someone who is a Zipp dealer, even if the wheels are new, is there no warranty coverage?
warranties typically go to those with actual sales receipts from authorized dealers.
whether or not zipp’s customer service is friendly with anybody who owns their wheels, regardless of how they were acquired, is a different story, but a real warranty probably doesn’t exist in that case.
I purchases a set of Zipp 303s through the Slowtwitch classifieds. After a few rides, I noticed some small cracks in the front rim at each spoke hole. I did some internet research and found that this was a common problem with 303 rims of a certain vintage (not with current models). I contacted Zipp and was completely honest about how I got the wheels and what the issue was. I was completely amazed that they replaced the rim on the front wheel UNDER WARRANTY! It cost me UPS charges to get the wheel to Indiana and that’s all. A few months later, I was riding the wheels and hit a rather insignificant bump and the rear wheel carbon cracked to the point that the wheel was unrideable. I contacted Zipp and, again, they replaced the rim under full warranty. In each case, I got the latest and greatest, upgraded Zipp 303 rims.
I’m sure it didn’t hurt that I’ve purchased quite a number of Zipp wheels at full retail and I reminded them of that fact. But I didn’t have to twist arms. I was hoping for maybe a crash replacement deal at best … not a full warranty replacement. I was floored at how they took care of me. And while I think the Slowtwitch seller pretty much mislead me about the condition of the wheels he sold me, it really worked out to the good thanks to unbelieveable Zipp customer service.
Your experience may vary, but I think if you’re straight with them, they’ll do pretty darned well for you if you need help.
