Buying Wine

My girl and I went to a nice restaurant a few weeks ago. They had a certain wine there that she really liked. She asked for it for Christmas. I’ve been to 6 wine stores in PA and NJ with no luck. I tried ordering it online but they won’t ship to PA.

Any ideas on how to get it other than driving to CA?

What is it?

Go to the wine store that you frequent most often and ask them to order a case for you. Alternatively, have someone you know in a state that can get shipped to order a case and send it on to you. Good luck.

Find the winery online and order a case (or ask them where you can do so).

apparently PA and the surronding states don’t allow shipments of Wine.

http://www.cnn.com/2004/LAW/12/07/scotus.wine.shipments.ap/index.html

The Washington-based Institute for Justice says the 24 states that ban direct interstate shipments are Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Montana, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah and Vermont.

yup, you should be able to order it through wherever you buy wine. Might have a minimum amount of bottles you have to get though.

trinity oaks white zin… found other bottles from them… just not this one.

yeah… that’s my problem.

i’ll give it a shot… thanks.

Calling white zin “wine” is like a brisk slap in the face.

The chances are good that she liked the particular varietal moreso than any one brand. For instance, if she liked a $70 bottle of Chateau Margaux Burgundy, ca '95, she probably would be just as pleased with something very close, even something as unsnobby as a Kendall Jackson. I mention this because the particular wine she liked is possibly NOT available to the general public from a wine merchant if it was a very fine wine and a very fine restaurant. I once had a $150 bottle of wine at the Park Lane Hotel restaurant in N.Y. and loved it so much i spent a year fruitlessly trying to track it down. Ugh…

I sold wine in my checkered past and have had this very same problem. I usually end up finding something comparable, and sometimes better!

Regardless, I’m sure your company is what makes the wine “fine” to her.

we can’t all be as cultured as you…

Find somebody from a location as close as you can that does not have crap laws and have them order directly frin Trinity Oaks

Take your wife on a little vacation and pick it up. Or, ask the manager of the restaurant to get you a case next time he makes an order. Works most of the time.

The best wine is the one you have in your hand.

If she likes zinfandel, well, that’s fine and it’s a start!

Did you like Cervelos when you looked at your first bike?

-Robert

well, don’t worry… it’s definitely not a $150 bottle of wine. not on my salary. and, i have found it online… just can’t find a way to get it. that’s all.

maybe in 20-30 years when i actually have money i’ll give the expensive wine a shot. for now… i’ll keep searching for this.

thanks.

True that.

nice… i like the way you think.

and, yes… i did like cervelos when i bought my first bike! (a giant) ha!

thanks for the link…

on a another note… is it weird that this may be the most responses i’ve ever had to a post on here?

I suspect the depth of interest in wine on this board is very deep. The topic will pop up occasionally with some interesting discussion. Beers too.

When you start buying cases of wine, btw, you know you are serious.

The quality of white zinfandel, in my opinion, is not highly variable. I think if you stick with a reasonably decent producer of wines - say Beringer - she will be satisfied. If she likes white zin, you may find that she likes reislings as well. Experiment with a few. Find a wine store with a helpful merchant, and you should be fine. You could also check out www.winespectator.com for recommendations. That site has a wine rating search function.
