I’m thinking about buying a set of Zipp 404’s from someone in my bike club…
pre-dimpled… not sure what year… Tubular… they look fine… spin nice…
Do these last awhile… ? Anything I should look for other than cracks?
I’m torn… I think I should probably spend a little more and get some used Carbone Clinchers…
but I’m really new… and not sure what to do… I’m not afraid of tubulars… I’ve changed
one on a ride before… not fun… but not impossible either… I guess I"m mainly worried
about buying a older wheel that is going to fail in some way… Do they last quite awhile…?
Thanks
They are durable enough to train on, no problems. If not dimpled, are they at least the toroidal rim (the carbon bulges wider than the braking surface)?
yes…
Tubular? Yuck.
If free, take them. If not, pass.
Very simple.
How much?
$500 with a cassette and skewers
.
Honestly, if they are in good shape and spin smooth I’d do it. Do they have rubber already on them? Remember that a couple of good tubies will run you a pretty penny so if they aren’t included you have to add that cost on.
for the set? buy them, if you don’t like them sell them on the classifieds for a profit
