Buying slightly out of true race wheels

Okay - let me just take the time to say this up front: I know, I know. Work on the engine first.

BUT - if you could get a great deal on some race wheels because they were slightly out of true (less than 1 mm), would you take it? What amount away from true would be neglible, and what amount would be too much?

Any other considerations?

Are they Hed3’s? Because if they’re sopked wheels, they can be trued.

The HED3’s can be trued, to an extent, also. They are trued at the factory using a tapered washer type thingy under the cassette body. If you ever take the cassette body off and then remove all the parts to clean, you’ll need to get the taper thingy back in the correct way or the wheel may be out of true when you put it back in the drop outs. Been there done that…got the T-shirt!!

In my best Johnny Carson…“I did not know that”…

As said a million times on ST…“I read somewhere, but can’t remember where it was”… Actually I have first hand experience with this one! : )

Z06 - I like the quote…and I did not know that either! (laughing in my best Ed McMahon belly chuckle).

I suppose, yes, that I should have just stated the obvious. Hed 3’s and the like. I could take any other wheel to be trued. The truing process for the 3’s sounds complicated and/or expensive, like I might as well just buy wheels that aren’t out of true to begin with.

So – Hed 3’s out of true by less than 1 mm? Go for it? Or skip it?

1mm? I’d buy them. The darn things are bomb proof! Besides, they are fast as hell. All the talk about bad in wind, shimmy’s at high speeds…I’ve never had a problem with any of my HED3’s or Specialized Tri Spokes. I really don’t even care how old they are either. I’ve had Specialized Tri Spokes that were 8-10 years old and never had a problem with them. I just ride the hell out of them everyday! I use the HED3’s for training and the HED 3D with a HED3 Carbon front for racing.

1mm will probably never be noticable unless you have a tendency to stare at the front brake pads while you should be looking forward while you ride.

Buy them
.

Dont buy them! I repeat, DON’T! By the way, where were you going to buy them from, and can I get the phone number?
