So, I’ve been doing this sport for about 7 years now. On my 3rd set of bike shoes. First set failed (two narrow). Second set was good but Velcro lost it’s stickiness. 3rd set are failing (too narrow).
I wear a 12EEEE running shoe.
I’ve bought all three pairs of shoes from LBS and have always been disappointed that they don’t carry my size. So, measure me, take a swag at what I need, they order, and then I am forced to buy what they ordered even if isn’t a great fit. What I’m looking for is:
a) some recommendations on wider bike shoes
b) recommendations on where I can order bike shoes so that I can return if necessary. If ordering online, I don’t mind bracketing the size I need by buy 2-3 pair and returning the ones I don’t want. But, I’ve seen many many posts on facebook from cyclist friends selling the $300 cycling shoes for $200 cause they don’t fit great.
With feet that wide, you’re going to have to go with the more expensive options. You might find a pair of Sidi Wires or something out there but it’s going to be tough. Cycling shoes just aren’t made in as large a volume as other shoes so finding a rare size like that is basically impossible.
It sucks, but your best bet may be to bite the bullet and spend the ~$1,200 (!) to get a pair of Rocket 7 or D2 full customs. The bad news is that is a ridiculous amount to spend on a pair of shoes. The good news is that they are guaranteed to fit perfectly. Also, the second pair will be (slightly) cheaper. If you really like the sport, this is a possible solution.
I like the 4E on the running shoes because of bunion issues. But, I don’t think I need quite that much room on cycling simply because my feet won’t pronate (causing the bunion). The other pair that I owned that worked pretty well were LG which seemed to much roomier.
So, looks like competitive cyclist has a GREAT return policy. I’m going to give it a go and thanks everyone for your inputs.
How many of you guys own a cold weather pair and a warm weather pair? Seems like that sock layer is about 1/2 size which makes a bit of a difference in quality of fit.
Depends how cold you want to go. You can also wear overshoes, much cheaper than buying a second pair. Personally I never really like too thick socks in cycling shoes, tends to numb and bunch up around the lip of the shoe.
