Buying a new freezer

I know it seems like a stupid simple appliance, but I just want to make sure I consider everything on the map. During out big flood storm a couple of years ago I went w/o power for 3 days and lost all my deer/elk/fish/chicken. We had one heck of a cook out though!

Problem was unbeknownst to me was that my older freezer was too much to handle for my generator…would pop the fuse out in 30 seconds and eventually blew fuses so had to let it go. I’m coming up on a deer trip in November and plan on loading up my freezer and want to get the right kind. I have checked the specs on my generator and almost all the new freezers will work fine. Anything else I should consider?

When you consider using a generator with anything with a motor you have to look at starting amps vs running amps. The compressor will take more amps when starting than while running. So your generator needs to be able to handle the stating amps.

yea thanks i went through that exercise at lowes they gave me a spec sheet for my older generator so that i could go shopping smartly. no more lost freezer meat!

We have a compact upright with coils in the shelf in the kitchen. I know for a fact that I can run it on an 800W inverter hooked up to a 12v battery so it’s not that demanding. As mentioned before it’s the start up that causes most of the issues. Freezes stuff nice and quick because of the shelves, great take along for remote camp fishing trips that rely on gen sets and batteries.
