Buy New or Makeover

This is a scenario question:

I’m new to the sport (only 4 races so far, all Olympic distance) but have done pretty well (always top 10%, missed age group placing-25-29-by 1 to 4 spots in some races). Right now I’m riding an old Trek OCLV 5020, I think one of the first carbon fiber frames the company made. It’s all Shimano 105s clunky wheels, etc. I’ve stuck a pair of aerobars on it, bought speedplay pedals, and that’s pretty much my racing rig. I realize it needs some serious help.

My next investment was going to be new wheels, but that really necessiates new components, which essentially means ditching everything on the bike and performing my own ‘extreme makeover’. I’m trying to keep my expenditure to below (way below) $2000. The way I see it, my options are the following, in order of increasing expense:

  1. Buy individual components–i.e. bottom bracket, fr. & r. der., crankset, cassette, & levers (probably ultegra). Then spend whatever I have left over on a new set of race wheels.

  2. Nytro offers an aero package of Dura-Ace 10spd stuff that goes for $1600 or so. That would give me everything: components, wheels, new saddle, aerobars, etc.–the “extreme” of the extreme makeover.

  3. Suck it up and buy a new tri bike (…which I’d like to do but I haven’t seen that many great packages for less than $3000).

I’m inclined to go with #2, which gives me everything minus the frame, and that I could get once I escape from debtor’s prison.

Any advice on the best plan of attack? I’m I wimping out by not going with a new bike right off the bat? Or does it make sense to invest in the components and build from there?

I would look for a new ride. Here are just three options for you that I would buy in a second. All under $2K.

also check out nytro’s mach 2. just at $2k w/ ultegra. A cervelo soloist w/ 105 is 1700. Sell your old bike on ebay for what ever you can to reduce the cost further.
Also check out the classifieds on duathlon.com, here on slowtwitch and roadbikereview.com, if you can’t score an up to date ride from one of those sites the world is coming to an end.

Definitely the Nytro bike. If I had some extra cash I would get it just for the hell. Cool looking ride.

I might be crazy or stupid or both but I can’t find the bikes you’re mentioning. I do appreciate the help though.

I have to second the idea of picking up a used tri bike. It would be nice to keep your old road bike though since you will likely wish you had it after a year or so. You can get a real nice used bike on e-bay for under $2K. Only down side is you really need to know what you are looking at and what size you need. I have bought my last two framesets that way and have had great luck. Ask lots of questions of the buyers to get a feel for their honesty and knowledge. Bikes are just like most consumer items in that they don’t hold their value very well. You should be able to find a couple year old bike for about half of what it retailed for. Bbikes (if taken care of) will last for years. Good luck.

Those Gipiemme wheels on the Dave Lloyd bike are super wicked excellent. Just as good as Campy Shamal. That would be a nice deal.
