Building up a Felt DA 700...HELP!

A couple of questions for those who know this bike.

  1. What is the best way to fish the back break cable through the top tube?

  2. How tight does the seatpost nut need to be. I currently have it snug but will this hold the seat up? I dont want to strip out that area.

Thanks

Tom D built up my bike but the seat post is very tight, he had to tap with a rubber mallet to get it to move down, I’m not sure if I could adjust the seat since it is soo sight. Hopefully I don’t grow or shrink.

tri1,
I found that the easiest way to “fish” the cable through was to remove both plastic grommets. Lace the cable through the front one and ease it through the top tube. You can use needle nose pliers or even tweezers to grab the cable and then lace the rear grommet onto the cable housing and snap the grommets on. On the second issue, the seatpost, make sure that the back “piston” is installed. I found that I needed to use a cheater bar on the allen wrench in order to tighten the piston to the seatpost tight enough to avoid slipping. I also had an issue with creaking in the seatpost mast but solved it by wrapping teflon tape on the seatpost before insertion. I hope this helps.

You asked the right person. In fact I have even spoken to Felt Tech Support.

First, make sure that the piston has “ridges” on the curved part that makes contact with the seat post. Apparantly there was an initial batch that did not have the “ridges” and Felt will send you a new one for free.

Second, make sure there is no grease on the post or inside the tube. Yeah it looks cool, but I hate the design and you want friction, lots of it.

Third, make sure the “set screw” that you are adjusting with the 3mm wrench has been lubricated.

Fourth, use a t-handled 3mm hex wrench to tighten. Tighten as much as you possibly can. I have been assured by Felt you will not twist off the “set screw”. You are more likely to break the t-handled allen wrench first.

Fifth, aways carry the 3mm wrench with you - just in case. Before I did steps 1 - 4 and called Felt, I did have a problem when my seat post was not tight enough and it slipped down all the way. I really wish I has the t-handle 3mm allen w/ me.

Sixth, enjoy your awesome bike. I just love the way mine looks and rides.
