Buffalo Springs 70.3

I was too poor and busy studying this last month and didnt get a chance to sign up for Disney 70.3( i was waiting for this paycheck) so can anyone tell me about the race??

Hows the swim? lake or ocean?

I read the bike is a bit hilly, does it compare to Clermont?

and the run?!?!

thanks in advance. I will probably sign up for that one within the next wk or two.

There is some big friggin hills on the bike and some more hills on the run. it can be hot and windy. from what I hear it is a great race but can be a bitch.

so training mid day during summer in Miami will help… and i guess monthly trips to Clermont for multiple hr rides will have to be done too!

Do it!!! I am from Florida and just moved to Alabama a few months ago, but did Buffalo last year and did well. Lubbock is flat as hell, but they have canyons where the hills are and the climbs are no harder than Clermont. You will be fine and used to the weather there. I can’t wait to do this race again as it is easy to get to and is very well put on. go for it.

It is a great tough race done by the two of the best RDs there are. 8 tough hills on the bike, including one right out of transition, mini-Energy Lab section on the run. the wind is more of a factor than the hills. it is generally a hot, dry, windy race with no shade, but lots of fun. Mike and Marti know how to put on a race!

Only thing to add is that it’s usually wetsuit legal–barely–because they go out in the middle of the lake and find the one cool spot at the spring to measure it. I’ll wear my “floatie” anytime I can but damn I was hot by the end of that swim (probably doesn’t help that I swim so slow and am out there forever and all but…)

It’s very well run. Hotter than hell. Have your bike in the easiest gear you have coming out of T1.

Sounds like a Summer version of the Greater Floridian lol…Looks like ill be sucking it up and going!

In that sense its like Miami Man where the water is like 77.9 degrees but still allow wetsuits!! what a joke lol…Ill either race in a Blue Seventy Speed Suit or ill use a 1 piece tri suit for the race…

Is there a hill right out of transition!?

FWIW, I’ve done Buffalo Springs several times wearing a sleeveless wetsuit and been just fine.

Buffalo Springs is the bomb. Has its own energy lab and the course is quite decieving. Everybody thinks Lubbock is Flat, and in most cases it is. It is on a Plataeu, and BS 70.3 makes good use of it. You have multiple hills ranging from 8-13% grades and what you desend going out, you climb coming back. It can be a real mind bender. The run is hilly and hot.

Swim is in a spring fed lake and is pretty stable temp wise. Mildly cold, but not terribly bad. Sleeveless work fine.

DO IT the Greers put on a great race.

So your saying a 12-25 cassette with 50mm carbon wheels would be good for those hills? hows the Wind…

I register next wk after pay day!! the heat wont be a problem coming from Miami lol

12-25 would be a good bet. I have done it in a 12-21 and 12-23. Wouldnt recommend the 21 unless you are a strong climber, but coming from Miami, probably not alot of climbing except over the key bridges. You can probably go deeper on the rims as well. I like my H3c’s there.

For wind. If coming from the South East prepare for a harder day and the lovely smell from the stock yards. Pray for a west wind, the smell will curl your toes.

99% sure i will go with a 12-25 on 50mm unless someone lets me borrow deeper wheels… Im actually a better climber than i am fast on flats lol…Ill actually be going to Clermont once a mth leading up to the race just to ride bike and get a feel for hills and ill be doing plenty of olympic powerlifts i learned for my legs so I will be ready for the hills by race day…

The wind sounds interesting, Why a west wind!? stock yards smell that bad?

The West wind takes the smell away from the course. The South East wind, brings it to all the southern legs you ride. The good news , is it makes you ride faster.

the proper question here should be…which of the 2 winds makes it cooler on the run if there is no cloud cover lol
.

i used an 11-23 and didn’t have any problems. you will spend more time downhill and on the flat road than you will going uphill … not the run is a completely different story. … hills like crazy

i will be there this year again. it is a great race

11-23 is what i currently have on training wheels and what i did Clermont with… so the hills on the bike are easier in a way than the run? damn lol sounds liek fun

neither. It will be HOT HOT HOT. Even the wind

Trust us when we say you want the west wind regardless of temps. I haven’t done the race (this year will be my first) but lived in Lubbock for 3 years in my pre-triathlon days. The funny thing is for about the first 2 months my wife’s head was all congested from allergies. Well, about 2 months into our time there her head clears up on a not so favorable wind day. I came home to find her wandering around the house looking high and low for where one of the dogs took a shit. She was convinced it was there somewhere. I had to take her outside to prove to her that it wasn’t the dog.

oh dude!!! it really cant be that bad can it??? oh well guess HTFU will be the phrase of the day if the west winds arent there huh
