Broke my cassette, how about that?

I’ve got a short steepish driveway, so I tend to launch off in my lowest gear and spin for a bit, but near the top there’s no choice but to stand on the pedals to get to the top. This time I heard a ping and a metallic rattle, so stopped at the top and checked everything and it seemed fine, but the bottom gear was a bit rough so I thought I had knocked something out of alignment. I carried on my ride, and then it started raining, so I stopped to make sure all my lights were working and checked things over again. I saw that I had broken five teeth off my 26 gear cog. Anyone ever have this happen? Its a SRAM 9-speed cassette.

Carried on riding, the rain got worse and worse, the light got dark and then I got a flat. Got home and was soaked and thoroughly cold, despite my rainjacket and leg warmers and stuff. Had to warm up for ages in the shower. Still, it was a strangely enjoyable ride.

You must have the world’s strongest chain!!

Nope - you using the Wipperman titanium chain or something? Maybe time to invest in the nice DA or record cassettes with the titanium larger cogs (except that I have no idea if these are any stronger or durable, but they are lighter and cost way more - so they must be better

I was thinking as using this as the excuse to upgrade to 10speed, seeing as since I will buy a new cassette, and probably a new chain, although maybe I send that one back to SRAM to find out why it didn’t break first. Then I might as well make it a 10 speed one, and I might as well get a compact crank, and then I could just get the ten speed shifters. But then, if I am going to do all that, why not just get a new bike with all that stuff already on it. But then, if I’m going to get a new bike, why not get a tri-specific one, but then, I will need a road bike too, and I’m kind of attached to my one, we’ve been through a lot together, so maybe I just get another cog and plug it in.

Hey, you’re using my fiscal rational here! Really, I’ve done things like that

I hear 10 speed chains tend to break more often…
