Brim Brothers goes live

… and so finally we see a working Brim brothers product.

New website here: http://www.brimbrothers.com/

DC rainmaker’s first ride review here: http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2014/09/brothers-announces-production.html

Been waiting for this product for the last 2 years and am on the pre-order list. I’m pretty disappointed with the news for multiple reasons.

  1. Supposedly doesn’t work with wire laces. Not sure why a strap is mandatory. I have s-works shoes and won’t buy new shoes for this.

  2. Battery life is only 15 hours

  3. The YouTube video says you have to set the crank length for calibration. Not sure if this is required every time you swap to a bike with a different crank length. I have 3 bikes all with different crank lengths.

  4. The software currently only supported for PC

  5. DCRainmakers results were far from acceptable. Their response was “oh, we’ve been seeing this sometimes”. That’s unacceptable for a product that’s supposedly close to being released.

  6. Using suguru to bond the power meter to the shoe doesn’t seem like a good idea. What if you want to adjust your cleat or put them on a different shoe?

My main gripe… they are made for speedplay cleats, yet don’t have a 4 hole base plate. So in other words they are made for the half-arsed speedplay users. Although I’m wondering if you could just drill out the 4 holes and use a long screw to go right through to the shoe.

you don’t bond the power meter to the shoe. you bond it to a sticker that sticks to your shoe. the cleat remains adjustable independent of the power meter. if you want to transfer it, all you need is to de-sticker and get more suguru and stickers on your other shoe.

but I’ll agree. sort of disappointing.

The power meter measurement is actually in the 4 hole to 3 hole adapter not in the actual cleat itself. So you will still be able to adjust the cleat left to right but you will need to get the adapter plat forward or backward correct the first time

I too have been waiting for this and have been on the wait list for some time. The pre-“final” details are all underwhelming, especially given the price point and total package. They have been coy over the price point, but I recall mention of keeping this well under $1k US. Shame they weren’t able to get there, and the results certainly don’t sound good.

While I love Sugru for small fixes, I was a bit surprised by its inclusion here. A $1k product should not be reliant on Sugru.

Certainly won’t be buying the first gen, but maybe they can clean it up a bit in the future. Oh well, money saved.

Yeah, not at all impressed with the final product, nor the results from DCrainmakers tests. I was on the waitlist but have decided not to buy them.

I especially don’t understand why the battery time is so bad in comparison to the other powermeters.

Hello sharkbait_au and All,

I asked the rep at Interbike LAS yesterday same question and he said it would not work.

I have 2 pair of 4 hole shoes so maybe in the future …?

Cheers,

Neal
