July 1, 2005 – The Associated Press is reporting today that Switzerland’s Brigitte McMahon, who won triathlon’s first gold medal, at the Sydney Olympics in 2000, has tested positive for the performance-enhancing drug EPO. EPO, or erythropoietin, is a naturally occurring hormone that stimulates the production of red blood cells. However, a synthetic, injectable form of EPO has been developed to treat various medical conditions, including anemia in cancer patients and kidney failure.
