Breaking the addiction

Today, I start the fight against Diet Coke. I have been a heavy user for more than 10 years. I have tried stopping before, but never really committed myself.

This weekend I overheard some medical people talking about how any soda keeps your body from absorbing nutrients. Anyone heard of this?

Is this going to help my training/performance?

Yes. I try and live by the rule if I cannot pronounce it then I don’t put it in my body.

There are alot of chemicals in soda. It may not kill you, but, who knows?

Adopting a healthier diet will always pay off in the end, both in training and overall health.

GOOD FOR YOU.

There was a study in Pediatrics released today, that said that every 1 serving of sugary drinks (from juice-like "ade"s to colas etc.) that a kid consumes on a daily basis nearly doubles their chances of being obese in the near future. Anything with added sugar or aspartame or those other crazy substitutes is BAD FOR YOU.

I quit drinking any kind of pop (diet or otherwise), or sugar-added juices, etc. after seeing “Supersize Me”. Not that I was consuming much before then, but that sealed the deal.

I quit caffeine cold turkey two years ago (used to drink 5 cups a day). I had massive headaches and was very irritable for about a week. But it’s the best thing I’ve done in a long time, I really notice the difference. Ditto on cutting out pop (diet or otherwise).

Warn your friends and loved one you might be Mr. CrankyPants for a while. And GOOD FOR YOU.

The warning sign has been posted

Does diet coke have caffeine in it? If it does, and if that’s the addictive factor for you, and if you struggle with quitting, I suggest switching to caffeine free for awhile to ease the transition. (If you can go cold turkey, so much the better.)

This weekend I overheard some medical people talking about how any soda keeps your body from absorbing nutrients. Anyone heard of this?

I’ve heard of it, but I heard somewhere just last week that it might not be true. (I think what I heard about was the claim that soda prevents your bones from absorbing calcium. Turns out that what happens is that people who drink a lot of soda just don’t get much calcium, because they don’t drink much milk and other good stuff.)

i quit drinking diet coke for a year, but i’ve relapsed! figure ill get sick of it sooner or later. i drink the coke and train instead of thinking about it the whole time im training and getting pissed i wont let myself have it -(true addict here, very sad) “if you cut open my arms diet coke will run from the veins” my training partner

I don’t know that it will help your training/performance, but I cut out all soda (diet or otherwise) 5.5 years ago. Initially I just wanted to start drinking more water.

The only soda/pop I have since has been during the run on IM’s and a couple of times on long, hot bike rides when I’m about to hit the wall.

However i do drink a lot of espresso now.
