Brand new 2009 HED 3 clinchers for IM CDA?

They’re great wheels. I never really had any complaint with them. Many race wheels will give you a harsh ride compared to shallow, flexy wheels.

Brand-spankin new means you’re going to be paying a premium, but aerodynamically, they’re a great choice. They do well in cross-winds and are pretty fast.

After discussing my riding style & the course profile with reps from Hed, I was advised to go with the 6/9 C2 setup. While I’ve not ridden the H3s (which was my original choice), I will say the 6/9 setup rides very nicely.

Sure roll with them.I dont think Hed3 are harsh.I have some mavic training wheels and my Heds are not harsh when compaired to them, lighter and more aero, yes.

Make sure you get several rides before the race on the new wheels.

They suck and you’re going to hate them. Just send them my way, and I’ll suffer with them so you don’t have to.

What’s your riding style? I suck  I’m looking at a 6:00 or 6:30 bike split realistically.

Ain’t nothing wrong with that time. All that really matters is that you’re healthy, you’re active, and you’re doing something you enjoy. That puts you in a much better place than most people. If the Hed3’s make you happy, and you are in a position to have them, then by all means do it. Who cares if you’re a 6:00-6:30 ride? They make you happy, so enjoy them.

In other words, there isn’t a huge difference between Hed3’s, or 60/90, or whatever. At 6:00-6:30, none of them will get you on a podium. So pick the ones that make you smile when you look at them and make you want to ride.

I totally agree with Rokko, buy what makes you happy and will make you want to ride. The bling factor is there too but that is secondary. Too bad there aren’t more people that use that philosophy…

I have that philosophy  But I do have a set of 404’s. I want to ride the wheel that will help me more with the course. I have heard H3’s are rough on that long of a ride.

I do plan on selling the 404’s though, but will keep them until CDA if the H3 is a better choice.

I wonder if this guy would use them for an IM
.

I rode 404s for 2007 amd 2008 CDA and loved them. I didn’t have the option to ride the HED3 though. i think you will be fine with the 404s. . . See, I just saved you $1500.

as long as your not in my age group (M 21) then i say go for it, i nothing but good things.

They are stiff (since the “spokes” are stiff in compression, unlike wire spokes), but the actual amount of vertical deflection in any wheel is very minor compared to saddle, tires, etc. Now that everyone has CF frames and knows that pumping tires to 160psi is actually slower, I wouldn’t be too worried about the comfort difference between 404s and H3s. I have a rear H3 for courses that won’t allow a disc and love it.
