Brake Levers

Anyone think the type of brake levers you run on a tri bike have any noticeable performance effect? I have the standard dia compe 187 levers on my griffen vulcan and was thinking of upgrading but am not sure if its worth it. Any recommendations on possible upgrades and how they would be better performance wise?

I doubt if any upgrades will stop you any better than the Dia Compes but a few others look prettier. The new Vision Tech/FSA are smaller and supposedly more aero.

I used that Syntace Space Control levers for a long time when I had a Syntace front end on my bike. I recently switched to a FSA/Visiontech front end and the matching levers. The Visiontechs are smaller, probably lighter, maybe a little more aero, and seem to work pretty well. They take a little getting used to, since they are very thin. The Syntace levers were/are great, very nice action, much better than the Diacomps.

I use to old discontinued profile “bullet” levers. Supposedly more aero, very poor stopping ability, they look cool.

The ones that are conical shaped with kinda like a ball at the end? I was wondering about these.

I have Tektro levers. No performance difference with Diacompes. The cable comes out underneath instead of he side, which makes for a little nicer finish.

Hello,

Yep, those are the ones. They definately make you faster, mainly because you can’t slow down much for the cornerss. Combine them with crappy brakes (a no name single pivot on front, a MRC center pull on back), carbon brake track rims and generic brake pads and They could probably make a case to DQ me on the grounds that i don’t really have brakes at all. I exaggerate, but the braking is pretty poor in a panic situation.

do any of these models actually route through the bar end directly rather than follow underneath/beside it…seems to me none can claim to route internally if they don’t do this.

I believe the Profile, Vision, and Syntace are all internal routing. I have the Profile and like them.

The Cane Creek are external, like the DiaComp.

The Syntace are internally routed, and work really well with the Syntace Stratos base bar.

The FSA bars and brakes are slightly smaller than ‘standard’, so they work great together, but you can’t (ok, you can, but it’s difficult) get the Syntace levers to fit in a FSA base bar, and I’d assume you’d need a shim to get the FSA levers to fit in a Syntace base bar.
