I’m looking at the new Shimano brake levers and was wondering if the brake cable can be run internally all the way through the Vision Carbon base bar. I tried a few times the last time I changed cables and gave up. Any tips?
what is giving you trouble?
you need a tiny piece of brake housing
then just feed the cable through
I did that through the hole under the brake lever and kept hitting something that seemed like foam. Conversely, when feeding cable from the stem side it slipped right through the front flat part which made me think it was pre-routed somehow.
I’ve had to do this a few times. Try pre-bending the housing where you estimate it’ll have to make the turn. It often feels like the housing gets stuck, but you’ll have to just keep jiggling it an working it through. When it gets close to the exit hole, try sticking a piece of wire or very small hex wrench into the end of the housing to help guide it out. Be patient.
Good Luck.

try lubing up the end of the cable first perhaps?
the carbon bars that I have include a plastic housing inside so it should just feed right through. perhaps yours is defective or damaged? does it work on either side?

I messed with it again last night - it easily goes from the hole in the stem to the hole near the handle but can’t seem to get past the flat to round join. Let me try the question again, has anyone routed the brake cable all the way through a Vision carbon base bar so that the cable is never seen until it comes out by the stem? In other words, can I run the housing from the round end where the brake lever goes in all the way to the stem?
While I have not done this in the carbon version, the aluminum version is not easy either. I did bend the end of the cable and it worked great. Also with carbon there might be some left over material from the lay up process so you might have to get a cable housing and jam it in there and move it around to get a bit of a bigger opening. It will work but might take a bit longer than you thought.
Can you take a picutre? I’m beginning to think the design of this changed over time. What you are describing sounds like the design of my aluminum bars, but not like my carbon bars.
