Heh heh… For those who told me I was crazy to do Wisconsin when my wife and I had twins in October, I say “You may have been right…” No… seriously, it’s going okay. I’ve done far less training than I originally wanted to due to family obligations and some nagging injuries, but I’m still going to do the race. I certainly won’t be setting any PRs out there, and I’ll be lucky to run half the marathon, but I’ve thrown all expectations out the window.
Now that I’m working in Boulder (right across from the Res, I might add), I’m getting more rides and runs in. ASAMOF, I’m heading out to ride Old Stage today.
I ride it almost every weekend. Still hard. Took me a long time before I stopped killing myself on the false flat on 36 and Lee Hill Road. That used to take enough out of me to really make Old Stage difficult.
Thank GOD! The other good news is that you only have to do it once. The two hardest parts are rounding the corner onto Old Stage, becuase the grade goes up fairly sharply from there. The second is right after you crest the top, because instead of going down, you sort of reach a flat with a couple more slight inclines. But you’re so darn tired you’re just spinning away trying to recover. I DID take the descent much faster than the 36 MPH speed limit Barry has placed on the descent.
I did not do the race last year due to a sudden illness to my son, so I missed the speed trap. How hard is it to keep it under the limit? I don’t ever remember looking at the computer on any of my past decents.
You do have to hit the brakes… especially if you’re a bigger rider like me. I hit 46 mph today. Last year they had a radar set up to tell you your speed. I think there were very few DQs. Just feather the brakes a bit, and you’ll be fine.
Depending on your wave, you probably won’t be hurtling down the hill at full speed anyways. If you find yourself in a later wave and come across a ton of riders scattered around on Old Stage, you most likely won’t be descending too fast because of traffic anyways (note: “too fast” simply means anything wildly faster than the speed limit). The speed trap is a few hundred yards down, right before a very slight left / right combination.
