Bottom bracket/cranks basic question

hi, stupid questions I guess, my Zinn’s book is in the mail from Amazon, but if I get new cranks with the BB that goes with them, can I mount them on any (road) bike?

say if I want shimano ultegra cranks (octalink?) instead of the truvativs (isis) on my bike, if I get the BB that fits than it shouldn’t be a problem, right?? or will it?

If the BB and cranks match, and the BB is the right size for your frame, you shouldn’t have any problem.

so the size of the bb is important, the shell width (whatever that is) is 68mm, don’t know the spindle length.

one more thing, how do I measure the crank length, I think it is 172.5mm, is it correct to measure from center of pedal connection to center of BB?

Cranks are measured from the center of the pedal hole, to the center of the dustcap. It’s also usually stamped on the back of the crank, so you should be able to just look to see what your current ones are.

As for the BB, yes the width matters, but also the threading. English threads opposite of French or Italian. You probably have an English threaded BB. So long as you get the same threading, and a 68mm width, you should be just fine.

great, thank you!
yes, 68mm english and 170mm

Thanks!

no problem. I learned a lot of this stuff the hard way.
