Bottlesizes IM Hawaii

I heard from someone who did Hawaii 70.3 this year that they had strange bottle sizes at the aid stations which did not fit in the standard bottlecages. I heard that story also from IM Hawaii a couple of years ago.
Does anyone know if this problem also existed in the last years at IM Hawaii?
Thanks.

Last year they had Gatorade bottles and commercial water bottles (prefilled supermarket type ones ) that do launch from cages that are remotely close to horizontal.

Thanks for the information. Better start experimenting with rubber bands than. Crazy that this information is obviously not generally known, all arodynamic theory about BTA bottles is obsolete if the bottle doesn’t fit in the cage!

You should totally write to the race director and explain why the aid station water bottles do not fit your aerodynamic needs.

I think that’s supposed to be in pink font.

The problem I had w/ BTA is that the supermarket water bottles on course repeatedly slid out and over my Garmin (and off the front if I didn’t keep grabbing it). This became quite a pain and irritation. Most long races I do I have the same problem. The only exception in recent years has been at Roth where they have really bike water bottles for all fluids . . . then, no problem at all.

I used rubber bands at IMAZ after having slight issues with aid station Gatorade/water bottles moving around at Kona last year. Worked fine.

i did HIM 70.3 Hawaii this year. they were regular Gatorade bottles at aid stations. i didn’t try putting them in a bottle cage as i just refilled my bta hydration, but they felt very normal sized in my hand.

Where/how do you use the rubber bands?

Where/how do you use the rubber bands?

I’m eager to know that too!

Where/how do you use the rubber bands?

Cut maybe two or three of them and then wrapped & tied them around bottle holder in a couple different spots to:

A) reduce the circumference of the holding area, making a thinner bottle easier to stay in place

B) add some friction so the smaller bottle won’t go flying out if it wasn’t totally snug.

Thanks. I will experiment a bit and post some pictures here.

Ridden with it: holds a bottle which is too small for the cage very well:

By putting the bands over the cage I can enter or exit a bottle:

Like this I hold a standard bottle and can leave the bands over the cage: they do not disturb further:
