Am IMKS this weekend I hit a bump and my Bontrager behind the seat bottle carrier collapsed (bent at where the screws adjust how the angle this) and slipped alot of my crap. Happened on some good bump. This has happend on other similar devices to me.
Anything that can be done to strengthen this construct? Making a makeshift brace or something to buy?
For this reason, I would love to ditch my carbon wing, but I just haven’t found a storage solution (training more than racing) that works better… And, yes, I’m far too lazy to take it off for shorter races when I don’t need it.
I originally tried to hike my wing up to an optimal/ideal position, but it would always slip down. So, I just let it settle to that spot it likes to falls to (which still works fine for no launches ), and crank it down there - I check the bolt tightness at least every other ride. It’s been staying in that spot just fine, so I’m happy with that compromise.
Same thing has been happening to me. The screws just come loose over time. I use this just for training and would not race with it right now. I was thinking of the loctite stuff. Seems to be an engineering issue though. The stress at the angle seems to be too much. Kinda sucks as I have tried every imaginable behind the seat carrier. Most are a total pain in the ass to install, and given that, I hate taking it off to race. On the other hand, this one is easy to install, but performance sucks.
In stark contrast though, I really like this between the bars unit - http://bontrager.com/model/07189 It works much better than the Profile Design stuff.
There are 2 kinds of loctite, one is red and the other is blue. I cannot remember the specific names, but if you get the red one, do not plan on ever getting that screw out again. The blue one is stong, but you are able to remove screws by hand. Like I earlier said, since I used the blue loctite, I have not had any problems with the rear cage slipping. It has been almost 2 months now.
There are 2 kinds of loctite, one is red and the other is blue…
FALSE. There are MANY grades of Loctite and many are the same colors…blue and green (and Red). If you use the wrong green (640) and mean to use the right green (290) you are screwed - no pun intended. If you want to use the wrong blue have at it…just dont bitch when you find out that the COLOR is not the deciding factor in the strenth of Loctite.
I have seen more than once someone get some Loctite “from work” and next thing you know they have 640 or higher on their bike and cant figure out why it is that they have a seized bolt. Not to worry, a blow torch will often get things out of metal bikes…carbon you are screwed (no pun intended - again)
