Boston/Foxboro area skiers

I have a jobby-job interview in Foxboro (1/4mi from Gillette Stadium) on Monday. I should finish there around 3pm. There’s no way I’m driving that far north without hitting the slopes while I’m up there. Acutally, skiing is the specific reason I’m going to drive it. I’m intending to stay overnight somewhere near a ski area on Monday, ski Tuesday, and AT LEAST ski on Weds. morning. (It would be nice to ski Monday evening too, but it doesn’t look like there are any resorts that offer night skiing on a Monday.)

So, I’m far more familiar with VT resorts than NH since I haven’t skied NH. From the way I see it on the map on skinNH.com, it seems the only resort worthwhile in the southern part of the state is Mt. Sunapee. Is it easy and worth going to? Or, would I be better served “skiing-wise” to continue up 93 to Cannon or Loon?

I’ve never been to Sunapee, but I don’t think it’s huge. It is a fairly reasonable drive from Boston though. Many people either love Cannon or hate it. I personally like the terrain there. My favorite is Wildcat which I believe is near Cannon. If you’re traveling that far and staying over, I would head to Cannon or Wildcat. Both have midweek deals, just look at their websites to figure out what they offer. Never been to Loon but I hear it’s nice. Might be more $ than Cannon or WC though.

I was fortunate enough to be in Vt last week for over a foot of fresh snow. I think it’s still good up there.

I would vote for Cannon - it is where I learned to ski. The mountain still seems “old school” to me which is why I like it (narrow trails, not fancy etc.) and it has a different vibe than many of the VT ski areas. I know a lot of people who also like Sunapee.

FWIW It’s almost the same distance time, to Mt. Snow, Okemo and Killington (all ~3hrs from Foxboro) as it is to Loon and Canon

Also, if you want to hit a podunk mountain in MA for some night skiing look at wachusett mt ~1hr from foxboro and open until 10PM I think

That’s kind of what I was thinking, because they’re a little further south despite being a bit further west. Google maps doesn’t seem to agree. I have the tradeoff of skiing a new place (NH resorts) vs. the drive home on Weds., which would be a bit better with VT. But, if I’m going that far to begin with, what’s an extra hour…

Actually, my biggest problem right now is the condition of my skis. The one pair I want to take with me have some repair issues that I forgot about. I don’t have the time to melt down some ptex. :frowning:

I love Cannon. It is also extremely easy to get to since it is right on 93. It can be very windy and the terrain is a lot tougher, but I think that makes it more fun. I also really enjoy Sunapee. Great snow, good trails, quick to get back to the top of the mountain. Not as much terrain as Cannon, but still plenty of skiing. They also do a fantastic job on grooming and snowmaking. I wouldn’t go to Loon over either of those, mostly because typically it is just too crowded and I find it boring because all of the trails are exactly the same.

It’s an N=1 observation, but that’s good enough for me at this point. Good info. Thanks.

(And I noticed that Loon is about $10 more for a lift ticket…$72!!!)

Waterville is very easy to get to on the southern side of the white’s.

I got jacked by Stratton last weekend for 82. Have fun, looks like there might be a snowstorm Sunday/Monday which should help.

Hey,
I live in Boston and as far as skiing goes, NH is just a state you have to drive through to get to VT…

Annual snowfall totals:
Cannon 150"
W’ville 148"
Wildcat 250"
Sunnapee 100"

Killington 250"
S’bush 262"
Stowe 260"
Smuggs 284"

and, too far for you this trip, but worth the trip someday if you like POW POW,
Jay Peak 351"

Stratton and Mt. Snow, with their Southern VT location, serve the purpose of keeping many of the NY’ers away from the better resorts.

Good luck!
