Bontrager wheel fairings

I see in this weeks Comic(cycling weekly) that Ekimov has been testing carbonfibre wheel fairing attached to his bontrager wheels. I sounds like they suspect that the UCI may make them illegal as they are not a structual part of the wheel. If they ever see the light of day I guess they might have a reasonable market in the Trialthon fold.

They also had a picture of a Trek track bike - adding to the speculation theat Lance will attept the Hour record.

I can’t find this on cyclingnews. Do you have a link?

That would be because he didn’t say it was in “cyclingnews”…

Read it again… s-l-o-w-l-y and c-a-r-e-f-u-l-l-y =P

It is in this weeks magazine, so I don’t know if it is on there website. They had an article on the Discovery teams training camp. Unfortunatly they didn’t have any photo’s of this but they did have one on the singlespeed madone.

No website.: no link.

I think the hour record needs to be done on a steel bike, perhaps its just the tube cross sections that are mandated. It’s a silly equation nonetheless and surely the madone chassis does not qualify.

The Hour Record is the greatest distance achieved in one hour on a traditionalbicycle, as defined in articles 1.3.006 to 1.3.010 and 1.3.019 of the rules, and asfurther defined in the following specifications:

• Triangular frame composed of straight, circular section tubes with a minimumdiameter of 2.5 cm.• Traditional style handlebars with an overall width of 50 cm maximum and 34 cm minimum.• Two wheels of equal diameter, measuring 65 to 70 cm, including tyres.• Tyre section of a minimum of 16 mm and a maximum of 25 mm.

• Spoked wheels with a minimum of 16 and a maximum of 32 spokes; the spokes may be round, flat or oval provided that none of their cross-sections exceeds 2 mm. (See diagram 1 below).

• Shallow, unelongated, non-profiled rims; shallow rims are understood to be rims whose cross-section fits inside a 2.2 cm square. (See diagram 2 below).

• Other measurements in accordance with those defined in articles 1.3.012 to1.3.017 (see figure “Measurements”) and 1.3.022, 1.3.024 and 1.3.025.(1) The spokes may be round, flat or oval as long as the width of a cross-section at any point is no broader than 2 mm in any direction.2 mmImage(2) Shallow rims are understood to be rims whose cross-section fits inside a 2.2 cm square.2.2 cmImageRiders must wear a helmet certified according to international safety standards, intended solely for the purposes of protecting the head, without a visor, and without any devices or shapes added to or moulded into the helmet with the intention of or having the effect of reducing air resistance.Articles 1.3.026 and 1.3.033 will be strictly applied.Best Hour Performance3.5.027 The Best Hour Performance is the greatest distance achieved in one hour on a bicycle conforming to articles 1.3.006 to 1.3.010.The bicycle shall be submitted to the Equipment Commission for approval 15 days before the date of the attempt.3.5.028 .

Its probably just for training on.

There needs to be some ruling on what is and what is not allowed. I think the no rules “unlimited” hour record was set by a guy you’ve never heard of at like 50 miles or something silly riding a fully faired HPV.

The current retro theme seems a bit silly to me as well.

Could you have a two wheeled bike with only one wheel on the ground whilst riding?

That would be the “unlimited record”, currently held be boardman. People are still welscome to go after it, but the “cachet” seems to be the standard record, also held by boardman. The HPV record is so obscure that hardly anyone pays attention other than the participants themselves.

Wheelie?

Not exactly. If you could ride on one wheel, you’d have less rolling resistance. A huge hoop with the rider in the middle riding on a single railroad track instead of a wooden velodrome would surely yeild less rolling resistance.
