There is a shit load of these wheels for sale on ebay. I’m looking for a decent set of wheels for my old ladys’ new bike and am wondering if these will fit the bill. MSRP is $399.99 and they can be had for $275-$300 on ebay. Do these wheels have any problems that anyone is aware of?
Thanks.
ps: What’s the poop on the Spinergy Xaero Lite XSR-3’s? Problems? Value?
regarding the spinergy xaero 3’s…i’d personally give them a miss. I’ve probably serviced/assembled/repaired over 100 pairs of them as my shop is a large giant dealer. We have signifigant problem with the wheel’s staying true, even under smaller riders. Also, i’ve found the hubs to be rather low quality, and serviced half a dozen pairs with damaged hub internals. In addition to all that, as an engineer, i find the design inferior as it focuses the stress on a very small area. Shimano used to do this as well, but made up for it with a very beefy hub, and also spread the actual spoke holes out to opposite sides of the rim. The xaero design focuses all of the stress from the spokes on a tiny area, and removes much of the support by bringing the spokes together in the center of the rim. If you haven’t seen a pair, there’s approx. 2-3mm seperating the spokes from each other.
I have about 3,000 miles on mine and they’ve been solid. Never gotten out of true, good midway point between an cheap ass training wheel and a wicked expensive race wheel.
If there was anything wrong with them, I would have found out by now. I’m well over 200 lbs and I ride some pretty rough roads, particularly this spring (see the Michigan Weather Rant thread . . . ). I have about 4000 miles on my Race Lites. They are still true and I am beginning to think they are indestructable.
They are the stock wheels on most of the carbon framed Treks and a lot of people appear to dump them on e-bay before trying them. They are very nice wheels and if you can get a good deal on e-bay you should go for it. I’ve seen all of them on e-bay too and if I ever had a problem with mine, I would have no qualms about picking up another pair.
I have had a pair of Race X Lites for several years now, and never had any problems. I use them as my everyday wheel. I can’t comment directly on the Race Lite, but I imagine it is of similar quality.
FYI, the “Race Lites” and “Race X Lites” are two different wheelsets, the latter being higher-end.
I have 1000 miles now on the Race X Lite model and I would agree with some of the other posters. They are bomb proof so far as I have hit some pretty nasty holes hear in the midwest and they are still perfect. I am also 6’3" and 205lbs if this gives you anything to go. I know many of the other slowtwitchers are a lot lighter than me!
I have the Race X Lites with the flat spokes. I have several thousand miles on them and have had no problems at all. Can’t be beat for the price IMHO. I have not ridden the Race Lite’s but my LBS recommended them as excellent training wheels to me before I moved up and bought the X Lites. Some I consider my X Lites decent racing wheels and have now done 3 IM’s and half a dozen half’s on them - very stiff and light.
