Bonk recovery

Ok. All Slowtwitchers unite and call me an idiot.

On Thanksgiving, I went on a ride in the morning. ~45 miles through rolling hills. Long story short, I FORGOT to bring food. No fruit, energy bars, gels… nada. I don’t know what I was thinking. Bonked heavily at mile 30ish… The last 15 miles was pretty painful.

Is there any recovery technique you follow if bonking? Lower the intensity, take a few days rest to recover, etc?

I would say in general replinish the glycogen. High glycemic carbs, hopefully within the 30 min post-exercise window. Since it was Thanksgiving I would guess that you probably “replinished” and then some.

How long did it take you? I can’t remember the last time I brought food for a 45 mile ride.

1-2-3… IDIOT!

Julian, you have got to pick up the pace! You have only posted 27 times today and your name is only up on the first page 5 or 6 times now

Is it that obvious that I am injured and bored?

DOH! Fear not it wil soon be time to retire for the night and then posters can go online unharried (or so they think)!

I am surprised that it took you a full 5 minutes to reply considering how active you have been on the forum lately.

It’s Monk’s fault. He has been pm’ing me and I have been trying to catch up with gottabekidding on the classifieds and posting here.

It’s all Monk’s fault, I am just a porn in his game!

That sounds kind of perverted.

what’s your injury?

injuries suck.

feel better!

Ah, you know him so well!

It’s an inflammed achilles which means the only running I have been able to manage for the last month is aquarunning and hilly bikes courses have been replaced with flat ones. This has also caused me to break out in blotches of fat around the waist! :frowning:

Turtle, I think I’d worry more about bonking in 30mi then how to recover. Recovery is easy, just eat some carbs. Bonking that early in the ride may be a sign of: over-tired, over-trained, blood/sugar problem, going too far for your condition level, etc. Seems from your post, 45mi is a normal ride for you, so I would assume your conditioning level is within that capability. Maybe get one of those free blood/glucose tests, or check with your doctor. The reason I’m saying this is, I used to ride to work (no breakfast) and had absolutely no problems EXCEPT when I ate or drank something sweet just before I headed out the door. Around 5mi into the ride I actually felt like the last part of my IM run!! What caused it was an excess amount of insulin as a result of the input of sweets BEFORE the ride. Once I worked thru this condition (around another 3-5mi, I was OK. This happened many times before I figured it out. Now I just take something AFTER I start riding. The body doesn’t treat the sweets the same way once you start your workout (no large insulin response)

Good points, and yes, 45mi is normal for me. I’ve done that route several times. Not sure what it was. I have been spending some extra time on the trainer watching Spinervals and not sure if I had recovered from that. It was Aero Base Builder 1 so I figured I would have been alright. Also I don’t think I’m eating enough lately to compensate for it.

I didn’t have much sweets that morning. If I remember right, I ate a wheat bagel with sliced boiled egg and a banana. Started my one bottle of Cytomax after I started riding.

maybe that is an English term like “blimey.”
.

Ditto on the light dinner. I know why I bonked… it was dumb of me. Just curious if there was any routine to speed up that recovery.

Some beer, chips and salsa, california burrito and sex with your girlfriend/boyfriend.

Have more SEX, then eat and have SEX again, wake up, drink some water, go to the bathroom, tap it again and then youll be ready for a ride. And dont forget, Sex is great after a workout, hehehehehhehehe.

Unless if you bonk during sex.
