Bone Density Test: beginnings of Osteopenia

Hey Joyce. Ironically enough, one of our local (Plattsburgh) triathletes that’s part of QT2 sent me a message from the QT2 forum about someone named Joyce who ran the Plattsburgh Half marathon that had this issue going on. I’m guessing that’s you?

I’m actually the girl that you passed around mile 10-11 on that race. I was also training for IM Mont Tremblant. I also ended up with a femoral stress fracture (mine was just below the neck though). Luckily enough I got it diagnosed a week after that race. I was fine racing but couldn’t run the next day due to the pain.

Because the location of the stress fracture, I also got a DXA and have osteopenia, almost on the borderline of osteoporosis (-2.2 in my spine). I’m also a thin, white female but am in my late 20s, when my bone density should be higher.

My calcium, vitamin D, parathyroid, thyroid are all normal and calcium was even on the high end. Right now I’m waiting on my referral to an endocrinologist to go through.

So to answer your question, I’m in pretty much the same exact boat. I got my diagnosis earlier, so I’m back to running now. Despite the lower bone density, my fracture healed in the 3 month time line they originally gave me. I did a ton of aquajogging, worked on my swim, and biked (at first with no resistance and then worked up to it). After just starting running 2 weeks ago, I kept up decent run fitness, so don’t give up on that!

If you want to PM me or anything, feel free to do so!
