Bombproof training wheels

I’m getting a new bike, and I ordered it without wheels because the racing wheels I have decided on are not an option from my source. So, I need to get some really basic wheels for everyday riding. Recommendations?

Mavic Open Pro w/ Ultegra hubs. People have been extolling the virtues of these forever and I finally got some for my Vortex and now I undersand. They are strong, comfortable and relatively inexpensive. I got the silver rims with silver spokes and hubs and they actually look really cool on my Ti bike.

Depends on how much you weigh and what kind of roads you ride on. Open Pro are good but might need some truing. I use CXP33’s, little heavier then OP but bomb proof. Go with Ultegra hubs and CXP33 and you should have no problems.

I have a new P3 on order and I already have race wheels. I bought a set of lightly used Rolf VEctor Comps on Ebay for just under $200. A real good deal on a “bombproof” wheel. Check it out…

160, ok 165 (it’s January). Road quality where I ride is generally quite good.

I use Mavic Cosmic Elites, I have 2 pair that have over 2000 miles on them and have never needed to be trued or fixed
.

Velocity deep V are pretty heavy, but give the aero feel in cross winds and are as tough as any rim I have seen. G

Mavic relfex with durace hubs 32 spokes cross 3 .Great for all types of riding.

So far I’ve had really good luck with my Spinergy X-aero Lites… weigh next to nothing and carbon fiber spokes soften the ride (a whole lot)… nice added plus.

If you literally want bombproof go with hand built wheels from Colorado Cyclist, Mavic Open Pro CD, 36 hole, built with 14 straight gauge spokes 3x, with brass nipples and either Ultegra or Dura Ace hubs. These wheels will be decently heavy but could possibly outlast your bike.

FYI,… I built wheels for CC for 2 years and consider myself qualified to understand what makes a wheel “bombproof”.

Don’t open pros have a clicking problem ?

ditto on the rolf vector comps. mine came with my P2K (first model released in 2000). i’ve ridden them on very bad roads. no dents/dings. no clicking (unlike my ksyriums). never been trued in almost 4 years. if you can find them used on ebay you won’t be disappointed.

No. A hub that a particular rim is built around may have a “clicking problem” (bearings etc). The Open Pro is an excellent rim.

Open pros click !!! Check it at bicycling.com lots of trouble with clicking rims.

My post wasn’t very well stated actually. Bombproof is less important because of generally good road quality around here. My inquiry would have been better stated as “cheap, but reliable training wheels”.

Anyway, I just bought these on ebay:

THESE ARE VERY NICE BRAND NEW WHEELS. MAVIC CXP22 32 HOLE BLACK EYELETED CLINCHER RIMS WITH MACHINED SIDE WALLS. 14 GAUGE DT SPOKES. BLACK SHIMANO 105 HUBS WITH SKEWERS INCLUDED. TOTALLY NEW AND UNUSED. GREAT UPGRADE OR FANCY WINTER WHEELS

I think they will get the job done. Now I need a cassette for the training wheels, some pedals, a renn disk and whatever I opt for on the front. Back to shopping.

I like velocity deep V for training. I also have an older set of matrix ISO III rims laced to ultegra hubs with DB spokes that I couldn’t destroy if I wanted. You may find them cheap at a shop, kind of like CPX33’s, but don’t get the older ISO models as they have issues.

I ofen see velocity rims on ebay pretty cheap though, kind of hard to beat them for durable training wheels IMO, either the deep V’s or I think the mid profile razors (?) and the aerohead (?) for a lighter rims (similar to the OP without the click or eyelets for that matter).

I think most rims are ‘bullet proof’ unless you hit something you shouldn’t have. Not sure about the hubs, I have had to replace the freehub on my 105’s three times in four years, I have switched to durace hubs on my latest training wheels hoping they are more durable. They certainly are alot smoother.

I also like the Velocity deep-V rims. They are not the lightest but they sure are strong. I use mine for racing when I don’t want to use my best stuff (B races or bad roads).

A set of Trispokes off e-bay specialised, hed etc

Campy Shamals. Or old-school Vento.

I missed out and a clincher set on ebay. (Deeply in regret.)

I like my Gipiemme Techno 024s also as a training set. Equivalent to a Velocity Fusion in terms of rim depth (25mm).
