Hey all you bike gurus out there. What are your recommendations for a bombproof training wheel for a 215 pound guy? Size 650c. Price would be a consideration. Thanks in advance.

OnThaCouch,
What about the old standard. An Ultegra, Dura-Ace, Chorus or Record hub with a 32 spoke Mavic Open Pro rim with 3 cross lacing with 14 gauge straight spokes hand built by someone who is an experienced wheel builder? If your really worried about the weight issue, you could use 36 spoke rims, but I don’t know if those are available in 650. The wheel building experts out there will have to help on this one.
Velocity Deep V 32 hole rims laced to Ultegra hubs with the thickest spokes available. Bombproof and cheap.
You say price is a consideration so forget the Hed3.
I say go with Ultegra hubs laced to CXP33, 32 hole 3x straight gauge spokes. The CXP33 are a little stronger then the Open pro’s. You can pick these up for ~$250 at excel.

I’ll second that. Open Pros w/ an Ultegra hubset is a great wheelset. They can be had new for under $300 and will last forever.
Pro cyclists raced on them for years.
Ditto the Deep-V’s and Ultegra hubs. I’ve used mine on some pretty rough roads and my weight has been from 200 to 220.
I’m 200lbs and had a pair of dura-ace hubs with mavic rims that lasted from 1985 to 2002 before they were too dented to re-true any more. The Mavic open-pro CD rims have a ceramic coating that is works well if you ride in the wet weather a lot but I don’t know if it’s available in 650. A friend whose 190 races cyclocross on Chris-King hubs and Open Pro-CD rims. check excelsports.com or your LBS.
What about the Zipp Clydesdale. http://www.trisports.com/zipclyd404tu.html
