I just broke my left wrist (minor damage)and have a race in 15 days. I have seen swimmers at swim meets competing with a cast. Does anyone have details on how they do it? Is it a homemade job, did their Orthopod build something special? I was thinking of making or having made a fiberglass clamshell sort of something that I can remove for daily activities but use for swimming. It needs to be very stiff and light. Any help at all would be great, thanks!
go to the dr and ask for a goretex/fiberglass cast… they’re waterproof and you can swim/shower with them… (I’m assuming you have a regular fiberglass cast)
If your race is open water, then you should not be allowed to race. It is very dangerous for other competitors to possibly get hit by your cast. If you choose to race with the cast, risking the safety of others, then you are being very selfish.
If this is just a swim meet in a pool, then by all means, go for it!
I’ve done open water racing (LC race) with a cast… i was out 4th, never had anyone close to me the whole time (which just goes to show that no-one can swim, cause I didn’t even have a wetsuit either!) However… I think its totally fine if your either fast enough that your off the front, or you stick to the back and don’t mix it up with everyone else who goes out like a bat out of hell for the first 200 m and proceeds to die a horrible and terrible death for the next km.
its my general opinion that triathletes can’t swim, and they don’t invest enough time into swimming. I had a cast and no wetsuit, and I was 4th out of the water, thats distressing in my opinion as to the state of the nation so to speak.
just saying most triathletes can’t swim and that it is possible to swim/train with a cast… and no… i’m a good, but not a great swimmer (its all relative though i guess).
good thing swimming doesn’t really matter in triathlon unless its ITU… oh man i lost 5 minutes to this guy on the IM swim there is probably no way to make that up on the run…

yeah yeah yeah. no love for the swimmers.
to the OP - sorry to hear about your broken wrist. I’ve had friends who have swum with broken thumbs but not wrists… if you can’t figure out a way to swim with it, could you do a relay and have someone else swim?
I would think that swimming with a broken wrist would kind of hurt…
I know a kid who swam at a big meet and did great wearing a plastic cast. It was plastic and had holes in it - definitely a professional cast, not some homemade thing. I know another kid that continued to train (club swimming) with his leg in a cast from a broken ankle. His mom was our coach, she made him do it. : )
The guy with the broken wrist wasn’t slowed at all by the cast. You can do it, just find the doctor who can give you the right cast.
