BMC TM01 wheel swapping issue

So I race 2012 Zipp 808s (hopefully super 9 in the back soon), but I have difficulty finding training wheels. The 808s are so wide that I actually had to take the screws out of the brake pads. so if I held down the brakes, and rolled backwards, I could potentially pull the brake pads out of the caliper. I want to get some training wheels, but without hassle of always changing the brake width pads. I was thinking 303s potentially. Are all the Zipps the same width on the brake track? I keep seeing different numbers, but I keep finding that the 303s are actually wider than the 808s. Can that be true? Also, if anyone might use Mavic CC 40s, what are the width on those? couldn’t find a single answer.

Would a barrel adjuster work for you ? I have one on my TM01 and I can narrow my brake pads probably around 4mm

That seems questionable.

It’s not. BMC says one thing - and it’s a bit different in reality. The TM02 has the same issue with ultra wide wheels (at least my friend’s does)

So your friend took out the screws that hold the brake pads in place, as the OP is saying?

That’s a somewhat ass backwards way of going about it - but he had to really get the brake out wide and it still barely fit.

Buy narrower brake pads (Shimano/Mavic/Swisstop) or shave down brake pads. Taking out the screw that holds the pad itself in place is dangerous.

Has anyone found a brake pad skinny enough to use with 808s yet?

I have 404s that I swap in for racing and I use standard shimano (21mm wide) rims for training. I have a barrel adjuster that is all the way out for the training wheels and all the way in for the 404s. I also had a problem with the stock set screws bumping the frame, but I took them out to make wheel swaps easier. If you are concerned about the pads coming out, you can swap in an allen head set-screw that will be flush with the pad holder (I did this for a few swaps and then got tired of the labor). These are <$1 at the hardware store.

I was under the impression that my TM01 had spacers either side of the brake callipers so I simply remove/add the spaces and its easy to change the wheels from my 808s CC FC to my training wheels and I use normal pads on the training wheels and swiss stops pads on the 808s. Maybe I’m naive but I’ve never had a problem and I change them regularly.

I have a '13 TM01. I will say that your concerns are warranted. The way the Zipp FC wheels shake out on brake area width is like this: 202/404/808 are essentially the same. 303/disc are wider. By wider, I mean to the point that my brakes set up for 808s are too narrow for the 303s. The barrel adjuster is a viable option, it just requires a bit of patience to dial it in. Personally, I got a set of 202s used to train on. The drivetrain side rear brake is a beast to deal with if you plan is to remove spacers each time you race. Hope that helps!

I won’t take out the screws. I think they are there for a reason!
I had the same issue but with Flo 90. Had to switch the brake pads to narrow ones to make it fit. Can’t remember the brand but I think they are from zipp. Now even with the brake adjusters I can’t get them narrow enough for my training wheels which sucks. So I just have my Flo 90 as my training wheel now. It makes me look like a bad ass on my training rides or maybe just an ass depending how you look at it.

My pad screws are out of the back of my TM01 for my Enve Smart System 8.9s. There is no issue unless you race your bike backwards.
