Blue dogs -- color dilution alopecia

Do any of you have any experience with this hair loss problem that occurs in breeds like dobermans and dachshunds? The problem arises in “blue” coated dogs and has something to do with genetics. As many of you know, we lost our old dog recently to cancer. Our young dog is lonely and sad and frankly we miss having two dogs around. I’m considering adopting a 3-year-old long hair blue female dachshund who has this condition. She’s a rescue and has a wonderful personality. I don’t mind the patchy fur, but have read on the net that this is a progressive condition. I’m wondering whether the hair loss stabilizes after about three years or whether it continues throughout the dog’s life (accompanied by the other problems such as infection that are also associated with hair loss). One other consideration is that our young dog used to like to lick our older dog a lot and if this new dog tolerates that kind of thing (she seems like the kind of laid back girl that just might) will it make the hair loss problem worse? I have a call into our vet about these issues, but thought there may be an off chance that one of the dog lovers here had some practical experience to share.
