Bloody Nipples... Yikes!

I went for a long run today, and it was raining and chilly, so I wore a t-shirt under a long sleeve running shirt. About an hour in, my nipples started to hurt. When i got home and took off my wet , running clothes , i noticed a had two little blood stains in my shirt. I didnt put any body glide or nip guard on, Has anybody else ever experienced this? My wife thinks i should go to the dr, that something is wrong with me. PLease set my mind at ease, i know at Ironman i saw they sell patches and things, but i have never had this happen in all my years.

thanks

It has happen to me on several occasions, Body Glide or Vasoline helps a lot. Have not tried nip guards or anything else, but the lubing 'em up will help.

I have to cover mine before every long run (anything longer than about 50 min) or they bleed every time. I think it has to do with the fact that I sweat like a horse which increases the weight of the fabric against them which in turn leads to more friction.

I find that eventually, lubricating products (vaseline, bodyglide) affect the fabrics so I prefer the band-aids.

Don’t worry you are (somewhat) normal.

This is no fun but very normal. It will be painful for about three days or so. I recommend the small round bandaids as any further rubbing will irritate and hurt for a few days. Wear a shirt and walk quickly to the pool as it does look kind of goofy. Tomorrow you will know what I am talking about.

I have worn bandaids for every marathon I’ve done after a bad experience once. Wet conditions are the worst for causing it to happen.

Good luck.

Chap stick!

This used to happen a lot until I figured out it was the cotton tee shirt causing the problem coupled with sweat and rain which as stated above add weight and increase the friction. I have found wearing a snug top out of the new materials has eliminated the problem so I don’t have to mess with bandaids vasoline or agony of the hot shower afterwards. Remember DO NOT RUN IN A COTTON TEE SHIRT.

I feel your pain my friend:()

Hapens(ed) every race to me that was longer than sprint. Got Nip Guards and have never had a problem since. Also found that band-aids work just as well but hurt a bit more coming off due to surface area and hairs grabbed versus the nip guards.

No need to see a doctor, just lube them with some bag balm for a few days and you will be fine.

Cheers,

Karma

Used to happen to me after about 20 miles of running, then I discovered Aquafor a few years ago. Put this stuff, rather thick, on your nipples and you won’t have any problems. It also works great on any friction area, like where you arms rub your ribs or if your thighs rub.
